.gif file format or bust. Scale them to the same size and make each a layer in GIMP, and set it to replace the previous layer every xxx ms with the next, then save as .gif. Otherwise you shall be tried as a heretic that goes against everything we hold dear and true.

I've made .gifs before. The avatar I initially used on the old MekTek forums was a personal creation, which had requests for public distribution of the file. I only used it for a few hours though, before a Mod told me to change it due to its size of 500kb exceeding the 40kb limit... Worth it. A lot of my work from those days is on an old IBM HDD I haven't gotten around to recovering, which seems to be the only way I'll see those files again as my scouring of the web hasn't turned up any, including some things I had originally sourced from it. I could re-create it if I could find the source images used... If.

Unfortunately things becoming lost to time applies to the great interwebs as well.
