Definitely not the worst mech in game, but i found it pretty darn naff. Ramming an enemy mech with my Octavia RS would probably do more damage than the 5V. :P

The locust 1M is definitely better than the spider 5V. Worst mech for me was the Quickdraw.

yea, my 1M personally has 2 medium lasers and 2 SSRM 2's. I love all locusts! (I kinda struggle at the 2 ams one... I want to have 2 ams on it...)

Try something like this...

I see a lot more 5V's than Gargoyles.

Because the 5V is one of the most cheapest mechs in game.

The Gargoyle requires ala carte 55 dollars OR 120 dollars total costs for the package.

120 dollar mech verse 90 cent mech. / 4 hour mech grind.

(Not deffending the gargoyle but I am just saying this isn't a fair comparison. )

Neither is the Gargoyle so prone to have fun with it than any Spider in comparison ;)

I ground it out with a large pulse, max engine, (4 JJs) and tons of lulz. I actually enjoyed it. I'm aware this puts me in the underwhelming minority of 5V pilots.

I'm keeping it for scouting/strategy/spectator sorties into the testing grounds or private lobbies. The combination of speed and hops make it convenient for efficiently nosing around maps.

+1 LPL, big block, JJ's for the grind win. Sold it, but never hated it.
Kept the champ 5KC for my go to spider. Left the thing bone stock, its an earner, therefore.......a keeper

The champion spider is a really good loadout. It is how my k is set up even though I don't have the champion. I sold my v (probably posted that in his thread once already) but I think it was a mistake, it is a terrible thing to use when you are learning mwo. But now with commandos and locusts under my belt flyin around with 2 mpl doesn't sound so awful.

It remains the only mech out of all the ones I've bought that I've sold. I still have my Cicada 3C, for comparison.

I never hated the 5V. I still own it. Max engine, 2 mpls, 10 or 11 jjs, high flying annoyance from above. One of my favorite mechs to drive while drunk.

With the current quirks SDR-5V reaches 6DPS@308 meters. MPL with a beam duration of 0.42 seconds makes it the most accurate lasers out there. XL280 + 7 JJ = 166 kph and a lot of fun.
I find that BAP is quite useful on this mech. You'll get a lot of spot bonuses and It's nice to have LRM support while fighting an enemy light mech with ECM.

I love my spider. I'm currently using this:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...4367adf6a461f82

However, if I ever get the c-bills, I'd try this out too (need an entirelly different XL engine, which is a shame)
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...c9e7c71f0fa4f3f

The quirks on this mech are absurd. 12 JJ's with the fall damage negater module is absurd.

It's fun to play with, even if it's terrible.

I personally like the ER- Large varient because it can poke people at range, which is something you need to do for a mech with so little armor. Use JJ's to get on top of something rediculous, then poke like mad. You won't get much damage, but you'll be a distraction that forces the enemy team to look around or back off. It's nice. If you can afford the face time however, I'd try the Med-pulse. (more damage, absurd recycle time, plus, the mech is about 10km/hr faster)

I cant post the build right now but I run mine with 12 jj, an well, and 112 total armor. Also it uses a xl275 engine. It seems fairly underwhelming but when I get home I can link some videos of places only it can reach as well. Also you can spend more time in the air than on the ground with it if used correctly. This makes you very hard to hit. I know if I use it right even streak boats can have a hard time hitting you. Not to mention the 300 meter jump range that will take you out of almost any combat instantly. Personally it is one of my favorite mechs and anything bigger than a firestarter will have trouble hitting it with its ridiculous manueverability. I'll get some bids of it in action and maybe that will help you learn to love it.

Alright I have a video of some of the neat places you can get on different maps. I was a little out of practice so it wasnt as quick as it could be. Also disregard the background noise my family is loud.

You have to cut your speed down to 160 to get 2 tons and that only gives you 42 seconds of firing time, and you're dumping a lot of that onto an enemy to get significant damage out of it. I just don't think it's enough at all. A good pilot can make anything work, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a mech that's as disadvantaged as this one.

View PosttortuousGoddess, on 02 February 2015 - 12:36 AM, said:

Mechlab says that's impossible unless you shaved armor from parts other than the head, and on the Locust that's just suicide...

You'd have to cut the engine down to an XL 180 to make your build work.

Commandos are amazing and deserve respect.

View PosttortuousGoddess, on 02 February 2015 - 09:22 AM, said:

Shaving armor is what you did to your torsos, going with less than max. If crazy works for you that's great but that's definitely still crazy from my point of view.

I don't know why on earth you'd think I would ever be willing to run an LRM Commando.

This is how you armour a Locust
LCT-1E
Any Locust.
This is the optimal base loadout..

Max engine, endo, ferro, 107 armour. (DHS optional, but recommended)
You strip down the 3 smallest hit boxes, focus the armour and use Torso twist to your advantage.
This gives you 7T to play with for gear.

I still like it.

'Course, I'm a lore hound so I play it like it's meant to be played - a jumpy, harassy scout. It's not been too good for me since my ping went up to 300+ (Thanks NTT East for sending me the wrong way around the world), but I still run it every now and again.

Find singled out opponents, get close, and take them apart piecemeal. It does more damage for less heat than the 5K. Just don't run straight at them like an idiot. Jump around like an idiot, and don't let them back into a wall.

Also, my first mech in any tabletop experience was a randomly rolled Spider 5V. Initially I thought it was garbage. Then, I 4+ TMM'd my way into loving it and my tiny repair bill.

Of course, I started with a terrible Pilot score, so I also developed a fear of passing through water hexes...

The Spider 5K(C) comes with an XL255, if you're inclined to drop a few MC on it.

Fwiw, I love the 5V. Haven't been playing long, was baffled by it at first but soon came to love it. I use 2 MLas but will try the pulses and Large/ERLL at some point. Have they changed the quirks since the last patch? Thought I saw something in the notes. It used to favour Medium Pulse but now I think it's all just general energy buffs.

Never do much damage with it, but it seems to draw so much attention - get airborne and everyone takes a potshot, LRM boats seem to think all their birthdays have come at once and fling salvo after salvo at me, but hardly any of it ever hits. Time, attention & ammo that would have been much better spent on something else, but the 5V just seems like a red rag to a bull.

Of course it's bloody catastrophic if I make a mistake :)
Got locked by a LRM boat on Forest Colony, a map I still really don't know too well, and was being chased by something fast so I couldn't hide. Spectacular missile death, felt like hundreds of them raining down

I have a surprisingly high win ratio with it: 1.66 . I think it is because whenever I play it I completely give up on personal good stats and money and just focus on helping the team.

Right now the quirks are god like, it almost feels as if you were carrying 3 MPLS, which isn't great of course, but I wouldn't let it go unnoticed either :P
