it did during my service. I was taught to pick up any platoon weapon and use it.

And this is the problem with continually trying to equate this futuristic robot video game to present day real life military. In this thread, "generalist" has been defined as someone who carries all the weapons. Real life grunts may be crosstrained, but that doesn't mean they carry all the weapons. Apples and oranges in every way.

LOL. I do have to laugh. No Infantry Unit fights as individuals. It is the sum of all its parts, any ONE missing weakens the whole. And like I said, If my rifle ran out of ammo and you're dead, I'm using your SAW.

Also As a Infantryman I am usually issued more than just a rifle. I got grenades, LAWs, and other peripheral weapons. You don't tell a Grunt what he is if you haven't been.

I tend to boat weapons not because it's meta, but because it's easier to keep track of 3 or fewer firing groups.

The closest thing I run to a mixed loadout is 2xLB10X, 2xMlas, 1xLRM5, 2xMG in my Cataphract 4X, or whatever the one with the 255 engine cap is called.

Still completely irrelevant to MWO, but thanks for your service.

In MechWarrior, I can and do use varied weapons to very effective performance.

The Thunderbolt is a perfect example. It is a perfect blend of weapons. Large laser for good punch, LRMs for support, Medium lasers for close and MGs for anti infantry.

Here we use it as a MiniAwesome!

Also my Atlas-S is a mixed bag of weapons, and my best Mech. ;)

Whether or not things work or don't work in MWO has no relationship to how things operate in the real world, be that real world military, robotics, or whatever.

I only have 1 threat in this game, mechs, and thus boating energy, missiles, or ballistics gives me a better chance to kill them. mixed loadouts would be more effective if there were more threats in the game.

Well my real world experience influences how I fight. In a combat game I use combat tactics. in a fighting game I would try to use combinations I Would in a real fight. So I would have to say real life can influence how we play in our games.

If by "combat tactics" you mean get shot as little as possible while shooting enemies as much as possible, then sure I bet your RL training translates great...

In what rediculous world do you live in where infantry fight as individuals? A battlemech is much more comparable to a fireteam than an individual grunt. A lance being the squad. And the fireteam is ABSOLUTELY generalist.

What ridiculous world do you live in where what I said translates into "infantry fight as individuals?"

That is a very simple explanation of Infantry. ;)

And yet, a totally accurate description of this game's "combat tactics."

You're very clearly implying they fight as individuals by saying that they're specialists because they don't carry every gun. They are ALWAYS with people who carry those other guns.

I'd be easily running a mixed loadout. If I had any wanting to grind out EC for the next 3 months, but I don't.

All but a few seldom used Mechs are mixed loads. My Atlas-S carries a Mixed load of short range weapons.

I personally prefer to have a nice mix of all ranges. Just in case you know?

My Mechs usually do have weapons that can punch an opponent at most ranges.
