It's not a bad move. It really depends on the situation. For a fact i use one LRM rack to supress enemies at range with for example a LL.
While i agree you should resposition at the time or atleast move forward while supressing, there is not really a reason to hold off your back as a 100 ton Assault
But it is also not fun when i take a lead and others do not follow, i get shredded and the mediums just 'laugh' at me and sit over there.
This is why i always let the smaller mechs to peek here and there and take the 'small' lead before i fully engage with the Assault.
Again, it depends on the situation but i can imagine the frustation (especially during a event or tournament) when a Assault just stays on one spot and does not move while supressing a enemy. Not all Assaults should lead. Especially in the Solo que the cowardism can be a great factor of deciding a match.

But yeah, atlas LRM boats.... /sigh.
I once spectated a DDC on Crimson standing on top of the dock uselessly flinging LRMs into the brawl in the B line. All he had was one (or maybe two, can't remember) LRM10. That's it, nothing else. Musta had 35 tons of ammo.

Assault in a pug match right now is the hardest class to run effectively.

Its an eye opener to how immobile they are and how peeking through a choke point is a death sentence, too slow to backup plus someone will be butt sniffing and you get stuck running into them.
In PUG its a rare event that a sacrificial charge will get followed through, so pointless tactic.
One LRM5 is just to give them something to do while they walk and wait and gain some assists (which pay cbills and xp). Get a hit in on targets which they have no chance of reaching to shoot.
You really need to bring the fight to the assaults for their firepower to work.
Think of them as a turret which gets into a position then wrecks anything which comes into range.

No reason not to shower the enemy with my love as I get into range to use my boomstick.

Admittedly I see plenty of assaults play rear-end charlies. That said, far more often I see faster mechs outpace the assaults leaving them in the rear with little recourse.
All that being said, yeah... the assault that make zero effort to spearhead kind'a deserve what they get.

That said, as a light PUG pilot, screaming at assaults to support is much like screaming at clouds.

I only play LRM-boat assaults when I need a break from the intensity of running my lights.

******* bullshit!!! Assaults have the armor for a reason and its not to sit back and lob LRMs over hills. You have LRMs for COVER as you push the front lines.

Atleast in my opninion.
Unfortunatly the solo que is not very known for good teamwork.

I also don't usually 'care' if my target is behind cover; keeping him suppressed while the team closes is more useful than the insignificant damage a single 5 pack is doing.
The nice thing is, the enemy can't tell if it's a 5 pack or my Catapult with it's quirked rain; go hide from two points of damage you big baby

Then I pop up with 60 alpha and start shooting armor stripped part to get in an one shot streak.
When I first started MWO I thought Assault are there to tank but if in an Assault you jump in front of 5 other mechs instead of tanking you will die instantly, Assault are only useful in coordinated pushes or hunting wounded enemies.

For every assault sitting in the back there's an assault left behind by their team, Or actually leading a push and getting completely wrecked before they can even react, or leading a push and getting abandoned by their teammates who ran at the first scratch on their paint.

Problem with that is assaults get quickly focused if they are the first over the hills. Ideally, the mixed lances should push first to get that first volley out of the way. It's human mentality. You pick a target, you want it to go down before you move to the next; meanwhile, that assault that just lumbered over the hill is ripping you apart. You move your slow-movers up and over first before committing your support lances, your big guys are going to go down really fast.
Again, this is all ideal stuff, and it falls apart pretty fast in PUG-land.
