For me, the uncertain longevity of the game is a major reason why I hesitate to spend more money. By the time Wave 3 is delivered, the game will almost be 3 years old. You're paying as much for the Gladiator pack as for 2 complete, brand new a-level games with both single player and multiplayer. And while not all those games let you play multiplayer with friends without needing public company-owned servers, you will at least have that single player bit forever. I can play through the Mass Effect trilogy 50 years from now, though I may have trouble finding other people who are still interested in the Mass Effect multiplayer bit. I can still play Mechwarrior 2, I can still play Diablo 2, I can still play Theme Hospital, I can still play Master of Orion, I can still play Little Big Adventure.

With MWO, we're paying to rent mechs. When PGI decides to shut down the MWO servers, the game is over. And your vast mechbay with 200 mechs with custom camo, cockpit items, C-bill bonuses, and modules.... it's gone. You'll have nothing left to show for it, except your screenshots.

That's the stuff that bothers me, right now. I'm uncomfortable with sinking more money into an aging game without owning the rights to play anything at all. Without PGI keeping the game alive, I can't even look at my mechs in the mechbay.

I don't just want to rent the permission to play with PGI's mechs, for hundreds of dollars, untill they decide to pull the plug.

I'd like to own... something.

You're not wrong, Alistair.

Though imagine the horror if Valve/Steam ever went out of business for whatever reason? *shudder*

In those terms all MMOs are the same. If you enjoy it and don't mid paying pay. If not don't. Is it any different to Battlefield, WoT or War Thunder?

How much is a night out, cinema or a take away pizza? I find that the cost per hour comes in at some of the cheapest entertainment around. Its even cheaper than a book, which is over in a few nights.

All this complaining about game modes is weird too. How many game modes do any of the top online pvp shooters have?

Never go to a movie theater?

Never go to a live music concert?

Never pay for something just for the experience?

On the flip side of the coin, how often do you go back and replay a game 10 years later even though you still own it and can play it? I guess some people do, but I know I don't play old games often unless I get a particular itch, and when I do that's why there's GoG and my old NES/SNES.

Mechs are so expensive that PGI should send us miniatures to use on tabletop everytime we buy one with real money or MCs. At least we would have something "real" for the money spent.

And that's why I have mourned the slow death of the finished, boxed game.

Even the AAA $60 releases need Day One patches to fix their often bugged sinpleplayer and/or multiplayer components.

Unfortunately, this is the way online only F2P game operate. It's the nature of the beast that your paid content is only good until the publisher/developer pulls the plug. But then comes the dilemma, since if nobody pays, the game will be pulled sooner.

I look at $/hour of entertainment. Those famous "AAA titles" rarely provide more than 15-20 hours for me. MWO has provided thousands (more than it should have, really).

Also...self-fulfilling prophecy here if enough people think like you, Alistair.

I will probably buy C3, mainly because I have now played MWO for 2-3 years and still enjoy it. I have paid $60 for games that I played a few hours and never touched again so I don't mind supporting the games that kept me playing. The cost per hour of entertainment is still good for me. :)

Edit: Heh,Terciel1976 you sniped me there!

Yes, you're paying money to play this game with other players. I don't see an issue with this; it's how MMO's work.

As for longevity, this game easily has another 5 years in it.

People played subscription games for years, 3 years of wow is 6-8 AAA games, Eve is even more for the pleasure of shooting little red crosses.... The only AAA game I've played this long is Battlefield 2. MWO a nice shooter that's not too twitchy and has lots of customization options.

One can only hope that the PVE campaign they will be working on is client-side so that we can keep it no matter what happens to the servers. One can only hope.

However, I think MWO and PGI are doing just fine and the multiplayer aspect will go on for awhile.

Been essentially 14 consecutive months of entertainment for me.

Compared to any other form of entertainment PGI/MWO is providing me the best value. And if i compare it to my hobbies of producing maple syrup and glassworking... it's probably SAVING me money every time it distracts me from spending $hundreds on a tool or accessory i don't really need.

Also, MWO has connected me with more ppl at the same life-stage as myself (30+, with kids, with demanding career, with limited gaming time, etc) than my work life or old-man rec leagues have. So that's pretty cool too.

The most important thing in my mind is the steam release and new player experience. I think its very rough at the moment. They need to put new players in against others in 4v4 or 8v8 for the first 25 games and then give them a choice of a mastery bundle. I don't know choose Cent, Catapult or Jenner for finishing 25 matches. That way they will have 3 mechs to master which are balanced and have 30 days premium which when it ends they will want to buy more.

If they get the steam launch right the game will double or triple its take.

If you have problems finding people for ME3MP, let me know.

That actually is one great idea.
