I'd probably run a timber with a lbx20 on an arm if it fits. Something like this:

I don't own timbers they seem fragile.

While I do use ballistics I have to admit that most of my mechs rely on lasers...
Hellbringer - 2 Large Pulse Lasers, 3 ER medium lasers
Wolverine - 4 Large Lasers
Shadowhawk - 3 Large Pulse Lasers
Cicada - 4 Medium Pulse Lasers
Raven - 2 ER Large Lasers
Kit Fox - 3 ER Medium Lasers
Panther - 2 Large Lasers
Enforcer - 2 Large Lasers, 1 AC10
Griffon - 3 Medium Pulse Lasers, 3 SRM 6's
Centurion - 1 AC10, 3 SRM 6's
I was thinking about running a dual gauss Jagermech at some point as those seem to be pretty popular at the moment

If all beam weapons were given an even 20% increase in beam time across the board, ballistics would seem a lot more attractive in comparison.

Might have?
The meta swung to lasers pretty much a month or two after the first clan release.
Once PPCs got nerfed it went into full swing.
IS mechs are doing their best to keep up, it's risky to try and run ballistics in an IS XL vs. Clan XL survivability and it's incredibly challenging to get multiple big ballistics + lasers on most heavies and lower with a STD engine. Even lower tonned assaults struggle to combine big ballistics and big energy in meaningful amounts.
This is why when mechs get released you see comp guys like GMan build an Enforcer 4R with 0 ballistics, why we see TDR-5SS instead of Cataphracts and Jagers in CW, why we see mechs with laser quirks move up the tier lists of available IS mechs - like the STK-4N standing higher than any stalker except for the Misery.
There are few exceptions of course, mechs with ample tonnage like BNC-3E or mechs with amazing quirks, or mechs taking a single Gauss rifle (which is always a great weapon).
Overall however, it's a laser game, for both factions. One faction has superior lasers.

I would like some of the projectile weapons to be more effective on the smaller mechs (Dire Wolves do great with ballistics, along with some mechs like the Jager) not sure how to do that without supercharging the Mechs that are already good with them.
Plus IS ballistics and Gauss are pinpoint, so though they are harder to use, they have much better "killing" power, which sometimes makes a someone look like they are doing less than they are since all their damage is to one body part, it is usually much better at killing than the spreading that lasers often do.

It may be okay for a little fun but that's about it.
When it comes to Clan builds, lasers first, everything else second.

My, how the meta has changed since I started playing, eh?
It is like fashion, everything eventually comes back in style. Back in closed beta the medium laser ruled for a long time. This is just the circle completing itself, grasshopper.

Speaking of Grasshoppers...that's going to be a fantastic energy boat, if it gets any kind of decent quirks.

You build and run dakka Dire Wolves when you/your team is playing short range and rushing the enemy.
You play Dual Gauss Vomit Dire Wolf when you/your team is playing at mid to long range.
