Except they can't sell you maps. Weapons, sure, that'd work, but they can't sell maps because in order for anyone to use them everyone has to have them.
Items they can restrict. If you've paid for it and I haven't, then the mechlab can simply prevent me from installing it on my Mech and we can still play together.
But we both have to have the same maps or we can't play in the same game.

Honestly looking at the mech list, I think, aside from a few spots (40 tons, 70 tons, maybe 75 tons, and 90/ 95 tons brackets), we don't actually need more mechs. Personally I think we need more maps instead.
I'd rather have revamped game modes, the current ones are so lack luster they feel half finished.

Why are people in such a damn hurry?
It's not really about the hurry, I can spend forever and a day doing a well balanced CW or just PUGAlandia. It's stompy robot shooting, right?
It's more about having the variety to keep people experimenting and interested. What made Btech workable in the 80s with its heavy game mechanics was that they kept the variety somewhat sane, primarily by having a limited mech construction framework (20 to 100 tons, only >40 engines to choose from, and about 3 classes of weapons, etc. etc.). That made the maths workable then, even with the record sheets.
Nowadays, with the gaming norm moving to quick and fast mechanics, and in our context, with computing taking the heavy lifting for the maths, having such a constrained framework becomes a liability, not an asset. Introducing more options to open up the framework keeps people interested and creating new builds, and directly provides more positive challenges in-game (in that people have to adapt in game quickly to surprising builds). The only way to do that and still stay honest to the franchise is to advance the timeline sufficiently to make such options available according to lore.

Let's just hope PGI doesn't waste their time on 'Mechs that don't have big demand from here on out. We already have a huge line up, we don't need to clog up the roster with robots nobody recognizes or wants to buy when time and money can be spent on maps, balancing, and world building.

These include:
Wolfhound
Dart
Daimyo
Komodo
Mongrel
Bushwacker
Grim Reaper
Grand Dragon
Linebacker
Falconer
War Dog
Gunslinger
Imp
Now they may be packaged as prototypes.
As far as I know they rolled back the timeline to 3049-3050 to preserve the clan invasion timeline.
Going to 3053 would be the end of wave 5 of the invasion.

ya well not happening....
reason.. in the eyes of the devs... more maps, weapons, enjoyable CW and bug fixes dont bring in revenue... mechs do..so thats why they make mechs only

I still think PGI would have been better off doing
* MechWarrior Online: The Succession Wars (set in 3025)
* MechWarrior Online: The Clan Invasion (set in 3050)
* MechWarrior Online: Word of Blake (set in 3067)
