I will agree that Assault Mechs have ruled the battlefield in every Mechwarrior that I have played thus far. In single player campaigns, the last several missions could not be won with anything but whole lances of assaults. I did quite well with all weight classes in MW4, but that is not typical. Typically, a team of all 90-100 ton mechs would win against anything smaller.
So far this looks like a much different game. I hope that it is. I enjoy playing with speed. I chose the Jenner for my founder's mech. I play with lights mostly because that is what I like to use, win or lose. I am playing to have fun first and foremost, and light mechs are fun. If my lancemates agree that I should take a heavy or assault, that is what I will pilot. If they tell me to take whatever, it will probably be a Raven, or my Jenner that I paid $60 for.

I just hope that your wrong and I didn't make a poor choice. As I said though, I will put some miles on the thing regardless.

Yah I remember when playing MW4 in an assault mech and trying to hit a scout that was running circles around me. Was a little annoying to say the least. Those scouts would also try to distract the assualt mechs so the scouts friends could get free pickings on you. Does anyone remember how long it took to reverse and back up in an assualt mech? Talk about feeling overweight!! LOL!! This guy just thinks fire power is everything and totally forgot about mobility in the battlefield.

I gotta agree with OP, all these people are deluding themselves thinking they'll be able to just run circles around assault to chip them down.

If I had to put my money on it, I'd put it on an all assault lances.

Thread will be locked soon. Thank you all for your participation but the OP is for sure trying to get a beta tester to slip up and give out in game info. I suggest... not to try any further to convince the OP otherwise. Especially if you may be a beta tester. thank you.

If we're going to dredge up the old MechWarrior games, I had jolly good fun taking out Daishis in MW4, with my Thunderbolt-equipped Hellspawn. The skill of the Daishis' pilots never came into play. That Hellspawn was running with an ECM package, so that it couldn't be detected, until it was well within firing range, and after taking a shot or two, it could fade away, before the its opponent could respond. Reposition and repeat. I was just exploiting the assault mech's inability to dictate the range of the engagement.

Assault mechs have their role. They are very effective at area denial, but without support to help them deal with threats from behind or at the edges of their range, those assault mechs can be pretty vulnerable.

Assault mechs did NOT = insta win in other mech games. MW4, you might have wrecked nublets with ease. MW3? Bring any mech you want, with any load out you want, with any amount of armour you want. I will bring a Strider. You will lose. Not maybe.
Most common question asked of me after a training session with new people, which I hosted many of.
"Did I even hit you? at all?"
"Ummm , no"

Bring a Daishi against Dawg Pack or any of the other C0 elite level players.
You will lose. Not maybe.

The devs from what I have seen have gone to great effort to make all the mechs viable.
We have waited 10 years. Not all that patiently.
But it looks like it will be AWESOME!!!!!

um.... No. The Devs already stated this is NOT how it is. That all weight classes are viable. From what I see on the released dev videos so far, What both Paul and Russ have said. That is true.

One on one, this is true, but if 3 lights took on one assault (which would be just about the same in tonnage give or take) i would have my money on the light mechs.

Even two. Jenners pack quad mediums.

It doesn't take many passes across the backside of a 'Mech to rip the armor off with that kinda firepower. Then add SRM's and watch the crits happen. An assault solo vs multiple lights is going to look like a WWII bomber being torn to bits by fighter pilots.

my problem is that the way you are describing it is like saying that assaults wont be able to beat anything. THAT MAKES SENSE.

than wait for more video and or your beta invite. You are a founders buyer as your tag says. You will get an invite SOON. Once in, then see for yourself. But until then, your way of thinking is just not sound. Im really trying to give friendly advice here. Stop while you are ahead.

The extremely obvious way to balance assault mechs is to impose a drop limit on the various weight classes.

From what we have seen, you pick a mech before the matchmaking process begins.

What this means is that the developers can program matchmaking to filter our certain weight classes after the spots for them have been filled.

Personally, I think the weight limit will look something like this:

3 Lights
4 Mediums
3 Heavies
2 Assaults

There is no way the developers will allow a team to field 12 assault mechs.

This, a Atlas will have trouble handling 2 jenners, if they focus fire on his torso while performing a circle of death properly they will be fine, the total firepower of 8 medium lasers and (4 SRM's?) will have a fairly large impace if focus'd, ontop of that the jenners can jump, and far at that from what ive seen, allowing them to quickly glide to a highrise or cover.

Thanks for the heads up Nostredamus....Why should they care that he's fishing for info? We're ALL fishing for info. It's incumbent on the NDA singatories to ****; its not incumbent on us not to ask questions about the game we care about and have already paid for.
