Totally off topic here, but when I was just starting out I thought that flashing 'Low Signal' message was referring to my bandwidth. I thought it meant that I was lagging real bad.

I actually spent some time trying to troubleshoot my connection, thinking it was my end messing up somehow.

Im pretty lame sometimes

Cheers

Jax

Lol, I did the same thing

1) Because I really, genuinely enjoy it. I play other video games but none are quite as challenging and satisfying as this one. I just like it.

2) I'm pretty busy, so I can't play all that regularly to begin with, so I don't really take breaks as much as I just get busy for long stretches and don't get down time.

3) The weapon/mech/faction balance isn't bad by any stretch. Compared to how bad it used to be, I won't complain. I'd like to see long range weapons get a bump in their cooldown time to encourage more brawling and movement in matches. LRMs need a complete rework. Mostly, though, I want more game modes and maps for CW AND non-CW play.

1. Why do you still play this game?

I play this game because I enjoy resource management to go with the typical emphases on motor skills and situational awareness. I also like that it's a slower paced game. I've never been thrilled with those super-twitchy shooters like Unreal Tournament, Team-Fortress 2, or Counter-Strike, because I like to work angles than doing the whole man-to-man thing. Fight smarter, not harder.

I also play this game because it's as close as I can get to a modern version of Activision's Battlezone from 1998. That game was amazing.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?

I do. Mostly because I get bogged down with coursework, but also because it gets a little stale. Stale because there are no 'Mechs I want anymore. I really, really wanted the Flea. I would have bought whatever package it came in. Hard ModeTM is sort of my thing, but I also don't like driving 'Mechs I don't also think look good. I'm working on the Mist Lynx right now, but that's about it as far as pretty-looking Hard ModeTM goes for me.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?

How radical are we talking for this? Realistic changes or visionary changes? On the former front, I'd really like to see them dial back the quirks and instead buff the weapons themselves because, let's face it, a Medium Laser with a mere 270 meter range is not competitive. It just isn't. Neither is a five ton laser that deals a mere 9 damage at 450 meters. Buffing the weapons themselves and placing much tamer quirks on the individual 'Mechs just makes more sense considering how prolific some of these quirks are.

I'd also like them to take another look at Standard and Lubalin Ballistics AutoCannons . We know ACs have ammo types. We know the LBs are supposed to be switchable. We know that the impetus for keeping LBs as spread-only is because they would obsolete the standard ACs. Introduce ammo types, and suddenly regular ACs become appealing for specializations that can't be replicated with an LB-10X. Armor-piercing rounds could do small amounts of structure damage with a generous chance to crit through armor at the expense of some raw damage. Precision rounds could have increased range and velocity at the expense of rate of fire. A caseless upgrade could allow regular ACs to carry more ammo per ton at the expense of a tiny chance of jamming (<5%).

In exchange, the LB-10X becomes a generalist weapon. Can't match the range of an AC with Precision rounds, can't do damage through armor like an AC with AP rounds, can't get an ammo bonus with Caseless. What it is is a standard of effectiveness that you can't go wrong with when equipped with slug, with the option of getting extra shreddy on exposed components if you choose to bring fragmentation rounds. A more experienced player that knows his play-style would ideally choose an AC or a UAC over an LB.

On a more visionary front, I think MWO has been approaching BattleTech all wrong. It doesn't feel like the descriptions of the conflicts even slightly. At best, we might be described as two commando units accidentally meeting each other. More accurately, we are duelist units settling a conflict by proxy.

Instead, MWO would be way cooler as a large continent where a large count of players (128+) can pilot the titular 'Mechs, or a variety of Land/Air units with swarms of AI-controlled infantry providing a constant source of pressure. Think of it sort of like a MOBA, but on a grand scale. Shoot, even a Planetside 2-type game where players are infantry and can drop in 'Mechs, etc. would be pretty rad. With a game like that, it will feel like a proper war. Repair and re-arm could be re-implemented in a way that makes sense (i.e. cool-down timer on your 'Mech is longer or shorter depending on equipment) and OmniMech benefits can be realized. New players will get better on the fly due to constant exposure and iteration instead of sitting dead for a huge portion of their early play time, not learning anything. In general, the whole game would be much more dynamic.

Finally, add more chicken walkers. Give me the Flea, the Champion, the Gún. All of them, give them to me.

I have to sleep, work, and occasionally home maintenance. So yes.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
The HUD needs work.

1. User definable color ( for us color blind ******** )
2. Identify weapon location on our weapon list so when lesser skilled players setup weapon groups they won't need to test them directly into their team mate's backs.
3. Enemy paper doll should also put weapon locations on list, just 'cause.
4. Hit reg fixes. Ballistics are still kind of whacked out.
5. Hit box fixes. I find it fascinating that certain mechs have their CTs hit from ANY angle. Seems a bit extreme on 'mechs.
6. Improve randomized hit locations of missiles, and remove their crit 'aversion' tendancies. Always fun watching 100+ missiles hitting a mech with an open RED CT come away with ZERO damage to their CT, but any other location that WASN'T open crit, is NOW open crit... FYI: I don't use missiles, I play gauss builds.
7. Reduce point value/score when missile hit from indirect fire. You had help, you shouldn't get full score.
8. Up the VOIP quality. Sounds pretty bad. Increase its reliability too.
9. Allow removal of cockpit, I want the 10FPS the f'ing thing steals from my system back, thank you very much.

Probably others, but I've drank a lot.

I still play because I don't have the time to get into a new game, it's as simple as that. After 3 years of playing this it feels familiar and easy to pick up and have a few matches after work, without having to learn something new from the beginning. I don't even try to get more robots anymore, i have my light, medium and heavy, just click Play Now and go. I don't expect the game to go anywhere from here, if it does then great, but to me it's just a fun way to spend some time without thinking much. Candy Crush with laz0rs more or less.

Because its mech combat.
I played mw4 veng, with maybe two games going on for years, same with mercs, same with mwll.
Problem is, this is the WORST iteration of the series and I state that with out malice and with a sigh.
it is just so lame.
expectations aside for a "modern" version of the game, its like what I imagine a bad browser game is like.
Unfortunately I dont "think" its something that can ever be fixed since it "seems" to me that they just started out with the wrong framework.
No matter how much you try after the fact, if you are gonna make a cake with splenda and margarine and cool whip with canned apples its NEVER going to be "good"

There is nothing with more potential than Mech based combat.
To have this "game" as the flagship of the genre is gag inducing.

Let me hear your story.

1. Why do you still play this game?
For example: for the love of the franchise.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
For example ECM re-design, balance problems.

I'm curious.

Hear ya out

Keep it short as possible.

Thanks and keep it civilized

Edit: please keep it up. Perhaps we can even link this topic to Russ. Keep your answers short so he can scroll through it. Thanks!

I do play other games the little droid games, Star Wars commander, Clash of Clans, D.S.F galaxy war. Names Saltbeef in all of them. Waiting for the next Fallout game and there is a Mad Max game coming that does not look to bad either.

1. Why do you still play this game?

Because I love the genre and big stompy robots, and more recently because of the people in my unit.

Quote

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?

Not regular and not by choice. On a long break now because of life but I plan to get back in the saddle ASAP (and WILL be sneaking online when the Urbie comes out (SHHHHHH! Don't tell the wife!)

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?

Mech customization and the mechlab. Sized hardpoints, ECM, mech scaling..... I've got a list of little annoyances, none of which keep me from playing the game, but have me going "If I won the lottery and could buy this game......"

This thread suddenly crossed my mind when I was thinking about the same question today.

It's because of Alex Iglesias, or his works precisely. It was actually the reason I tried playing MWO for the first time despite the pretty dubious reputation this game gets from game journalists. I had been following Alex aka "flyingdebris" on deviant art for a long time and the moment I knew that he works with PGI, I just had to try the game! Being a fan of MW games since MW II also helps.

Nowadays I spent more time in the fora for no particular reason instead of playing but that's just me.

I only play because I have friends who play from time to time. I take breaks whenever I can, because the endleas TDM structure and obnoxiousness of the game frustrate me

. I think the game could be improved In countless ways . First and foremost would be the removal of pinpoint accuracy and instant convergence. More of a simulator feel, as opposed to an FPS feel might also help, as that would be closer to the game I was expecting when I first started playing.
