As trends go in this game, the lowest risk, highest reward weapons will always be used. That always changes with whatever buff or nerf that comes out. Imagine if the charge was gone? No one would bother using anything else, especially with a lot of the cooldown quirks for ballistics and a lvl5 module.
People in games either set themselves apart from the trends, make new trends or just jump on the bandwagon. Most people are the latter of the three. They actively look up what a lot of people are using, then just copy and paste it to their mech. I don't think it makes any particular weapon op, but a team does work more efficiently when everyone is armed the same.
I could see people saying the same thing if 12 guys jumped in a game with nothing but mechs armed with srm6s, clan does this to a point in cw with streak stormcrows to counter light rushes. But, if 12 guys jumped in missile boats decked out with srm6s, things would die really quickly within 270-350m depending on quirks. Problem is, the risk of getting the whole team into position to use them would be hard and take a lot more teamwork, especially in cw, where there are multiple ways around defenders, or when you need some range as an attacker.
Long range is easy and low risk, everyone gets together, someone calls targets, any half awake drooling toad can use long range weapons just enough that it suppresses the targets, letting the more skilled players use the weapons to their full effect. In short, long range weapons allow for more centralized leadership and control, therefore, there will always be a spammed long range weapn.
