X-Wing alliance is awesome. The installer is 16-bit, so last time I went through, I had to install it in a 32-bit virtual PC, then copy the folder to my Win7 64-bit drive, and it played perfectly (somehow... that game is so old)

Really? I installed it right onto my Win7 64 bit PC with no problems
I think I found some patch out there to make the textures work with modern NVIDIA cards... and some High Definition pack... it's great.

RE: Which HOTAS to buy, I can't recommend the Thrustmaster Warthog enough.

It's heavier than I am, built like an effing truck with no give or wobble that shouldn't be there. No plastic parts to shear, solid, very well cast metal parts, with a removable, predrilled (for mounting purposes) baseplate for the joystick and mounting holes in the throttle base.

The software is.... thorough, a little confusing at first, but it's insanely powerful in what you can program it to do. Combined with the absolutely mental number of switches, hats and buttons that the A-10C has on it's HOTAS it's goodbye keyboard, unless someone broke their headset and needs to be given written instructions XD

The only downside is the palpitation inducing pricetag. I'm quite certain though, that this beast will probably outlast me.

--EDIT: Actually, I can think of one other downside, if your rig is in a room prone to get cold, you'll need a set of thin neoprene or leather pilots gloves. Plastic may be cheap, break easy and never fit right, but at least it warms to the touch....

Oh man, X-Wing Alliance. I -loved- that game, I used to play it -all- the time. I still have my disc literally right next to me! (That's right XWA, I'm looking at you > ). I even used to have a clan back on the MSN Zone (heck, I think it was before MSN owned it even), called Rogue Squadron Elite (redundancy!). Good times!

Although I think the Extreme 3D pro is about the best value for money on the market. I just don't have the Dough for one of those G940s *Commence drool*

I broke 2x of those Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, they have a precise aiming, smooth handling and perfect yawing. but less quality in material. Best Joystick in my opinion for MW was the Thrustmaster Top Gun Fox 2Pro USB , same performances like the Extreme 3D Pro , fits perfectly in my hand, i did some customization on yawing for better torso gyration because those plastic parts inside the joystick are weak. I 've bought it 2003 and its still working

I'm using my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. It's been collecting dust on a shelf for years because I only ever used it for MechWarrior 3/4, Crimson Skies, and MS Flight Sim 2004, so I'm glad it's gonna see some action again soon.

Great thread, I think after reading over everyones thoughts, I am going for the Saitek X52 Pro. It just looks sturdy and sexy. Just like I like my women and my mechs! Booyah!

Well I was going to get the Saitek X-52 Pro but I've been reading that it can be a mixed bag when it comes to durability whereas the CH Products stuff while not as cool looking seems to last. I think I will go for the CH Products Combat Stick

I hope to get it working.. it was my favorite controller for MechAssualt on the XBox. NO one has made a similar joystick/controller before or since..

Fortunately they made it for both Xbox and PS2, and there is a PS2 to PS3 (USB) Convertor and PS3 controller driver online.. so I have an outside shot at it working. Xbox was camo colored, PS2 was blue and there was a metallic looking one I cant seem to figure out what it was for.

I saw one of those, almost bought it. I thought it had an old style pc connection, not a usb. So you are saying it is a console designed controller, or a pc?

Console came in Xbox (The original) and PS2 varieties.. company didnt apparently survive to make Xbox 360 controllers and such.

I loved this controller when I played MechAssualt back in the day.

Just hoping converting it to a USB and using the PS3 drivers allows it to work on a PC.

Its always a process.

CH Products has a solid reputation on durability, etc. You are correct that there is no rudder twist axis on it.

FWIW, I've had good experience with my Saitek X-52,,, whereas I went through multiple copies of the X-36 and X-45 (earlier generation) models.

Depending on what your priorities are, you might look at some of the mid-to-low end Thrustmaster offerings. They have a number of twisty sticks / HOTAS setups... but those models do not have more than one hat switch on the stick, AFAIK.
