A pistol in a holster

A knife/tool or some sort ala a Leatherman.

A picture of loved one taped to dash (would need one of male and one of female to be balanced)

A book (any topic: religious, physics, history of inner sphere or terra, etc)

A bottle of pills (implying the pilot is desparately trying to stay awake and alert)

A laughing skull warhorn . A Warhorn shaped like a skull with glowing red eyes. Every time you land a killing blow it let's out some cackling laughter.

"Serious" cockpit item?
Picture of adult and children(face block out by gloss or light reflection), with the word "come back alive" scribble on it.

Not sure what a Clan equivalent would be, class reunion type photo of Sibkoc?

Id like to see war trophies. Perhaps enemy medallions or banners with battle damage. Bullets holes/ rips and burns would be a nice touch.

2 small holograms of mechs (can be the just one version for the start and then add more variants for more money incentives or prizes ;)) - these hologram places on the left and right of the cockpit...shooting at each other with missles/lasers/ppcs/dakka. i could watch that forever...and would be a nice companion when you wait in a mech. afterall the purpose of a cockpit item is to be watched as much time as possible....:)

A bust of one of, depending on if the player is Inner Sphere or Clan, the greatest military leaders their faction ever had:

If you are going for any kind of IS vs Clans challenge again, these might be cool.

Other than that, Sereglach has posted some great ideas about personal sidearms and survival equipment on the first page.

I'm sort of offended that anything I've ever suggested in the past would not be seen as 'serious', to be honest. Trying not to take things personally, here, but since nothing I've suggested so far has been taken seriously, I'm not sure I can't, or shouldn't take it personally.

So, how about, instead of adding new standing, hanging, or mounted items, PGI makes the screens in the 'Mechs work, and then work on other things. Getting pretty tired of peripheral nonsense being knocked out when there are more serious things to be dealt with.

Other than that, how about a web page that displays a means of purchasing a banner, or mug, or 'Mech statue, or anything else on it that allows us to upload a personal picture to be placed on it. I'm sure the geniuses at PGI can make a means of delineating between an acrylic mug and a cloth banner, right? Since we can't have decals, as yet, and we've already been told that, in all likelihood, we'll be restricted to certain decals, anyway, maybe we can have something truly personalized in our own cockpit, yes?

Alright. Theme: Cowboys and Indians. I picked the following hat because it covers both. Cowboy hat + beads. This would be a standing item (or could be hanging on a useless monitor).

Posted Image

For a hanging item, we already have a cartridge, so why not a feather?
Posted Image
Or a medicine pouch. The symbols on the pouch could be customized for factions, but I would recommend animal symbols, or better, a medicine wheel, which is a rather universal symbol to most North American First Nations people. (Note, this has both a symbol and a medicine wheel.)
Posted Image
Or a Marshal's badge. Could read something 'Marshal' on top and 'Periphery' on the bottom.
Posted Image
You could also go with a horseshoe, but I envision that swinging around and conking the mechwarrior on the forehead if he leans forward.
For a mounted item, I recommend a Wampum Belt that stretches over the top of the cockpit and down the sides. It could incorporate a warhorn with drums and Native singing, or just drums.
Posted Image
Or a gunbelt with a cool buckle stretched across the top/hanging down the sides, and the sounds attached might be of a cowboy lullaby or the sound of a six-shooter firing with some ricochets thrown in for good measure.

Make a series of MechWarrior tokens/badges of honor/mementos, and practical items that a MechWarrior would have on hand. These are the first few to come to mind:

-A generic laser/gauss/auto pistol (semi-autos are replaced with small auto pistols by the time Battletech rolls around for standard military side arms).

-A stack of printed out letters from home with the proper Comstar Seal, seeing as they control all communications throughout the Inner Sphere, and inter-stellar communications are done like printed out emails/telegrams.

-A stack of generic pistol magazines/battery packs.

-An ammo can of generic 5mm caseless rounds or Gauss Pistol slugs.

-An officer's pistol, properly engraved and embellished as a sign of station.

-A Wakizashi blade as a badge of honor and station as a MechWarrior (I'd say Katana but that's probably too big for a basic cockpit item).

-A personal Re-breather/Gas Mask for use in cockpit seal breaches during hazardous conditions or having to eject in more hostile climates.

-A generic technical manual for a battlemech.

-A single or a small pile of fragmentation grenades.

-A personal Holo-vid player for those long and boring nights on garrison.

-A small tool kit with various small parts/tape/etc. sitting next to it.

-A spare MRE sitting on the dash of the mech.

EDIT: A few thoughts after taking a moment . . .

-A proper Katana of station as a MechWarrior or Officer could be put into a mech across the top of the mech cockpit, as a Mounted item (across where the Christmas lights and whatnot go). It'd be hanging off two mounting points.

-Same kind of mounted item could be done for a laser/auto/gauss infantry rifle. Have the Rifle hanging mounted and can of ammo/pile of magazines sitting as the standing item.

A stack of Cbills would be a very Merc thing to have.

Mounted Katana would be epic. And the sidearms and ammo too.

*edited to add* CB radio or walkie talkie. First aid kit. Binoculars.

-Wireframe mech hologram, a la MW2's enhanced imaging. Bonus points for making it reflect the current status of your mech.

-Old CRT TV. My imaginary pilot would enjoy having it while queuing for CW.

-Tesla coil. Doubles as a sidearm if you're evil and crazy.

-A massive pile of technician's bills, loose cash, reward vouchers, IOUs, bar receipts...

-A meter showing your current mech's kills vs a particular mech. I'll take 27 of the 'Stormcrows killed' meter.

-Manually activated 'warhorn'. One use per match, sounds like a person actually blowing a horn.

-Invisible emitters for fire and spark effects, placed on the various consoles in the mech. Activates alongside the 'critical damage' siren; Perfect for feeling like a boss in a tanky mech.

These are the sorts of things that are sparking (no pun intended) my interest. Things that make the cockpit look lived in. Adding a few of my own:

Spare tools.

Loose wires (I'm thinking mounted here).

A lady's glove or handkerchief (hanging or standing, of the knightly-token-of-affections sort).

A stainless steel water canteen.

Solaris 7 cards (like baseball cards, but with S7 warriors and their machines on them).

Spare clothes (a scrunched-up t-shirt on the standing spot, a jacket hanging from the hanging spot, maybe some sexy [or unsexy] underwear).

A box of playing cards.

Standing:
An alarm clock.
A roll of TP.
A pillow / an airbag.
A first aid kit.
A copy of MechWarrior 2 (any package).
A Windows 3.1 compact disc set stating its the OS of the Mech.
A handheld vacuum cleaner (for (=against) the hanging item).

Hanging:
A spider (not the Mech, not too big^^) with its web.

Warhorn:
Roadrunner beep beep.
Or a bitching Betty sound "shut down".

YES we definitely need more sentimental items such as pictures and messages from loved ones or home-worlds, etc. Immersive items would be nice, perhaps something to utilize all the blank screens in cockpits like the pilot's vital signs or even monitor ammo and etc. Also, maybe something with the cockpit windows? Cracks, etc? Not necessarily as an item but... who knows, maybe an upcoming effect.

How about an Ejection seat lever, or red warning danger of ejection if pulled label?

A hologram of a loved one, like a wife/husband/son/daughter/dog. I'm in the military and keep a photo of my daughter on me at all times, seems like something a mech pilot would do.
