Will it have JJs? If no, then no, it won't be the IS Timberwolf.

It won't be ONE Timber Wolf. Jumping is over rated.

I have to admit, the -5K is the IS a Heavy sleeper mech. I elited mine last week to fill my Heavy Laser boat(and oddly, a surprisingly do-able ER-PPC boat) build in my CW Kuritan RPing drop deck. I found it to fill a very similar niche as my Grasshopper...so I sold my Hoppers and run two QuickDraw-5Ks.

I'm actually quite surprised with how many people don't realise just how capable the 5K is, even though on metamechs.com (which is a very well known and referenced site), the 5K is listed as a T2 mech and among the best IS heavies. I guess people still carry the "lol quickdraw" mindset of pre-quirks when the QKD was complete trash. Fact is, the thing got very favourably quirked to match the "lots 'o lazors" meta which has become the "optimal" play style.

From my end it's basicly everything good about the timberwolf with no negatives. This is why it's a higher priority target for me over a thunderbolt in CW....

According to that chart, 1 Llas dps = 2.12 while 1 cLPlas = 2.97.

So, comparing 3 Llas to 2 cLPlas dps will be 6.36 vs 5.94.

Considering the tonnage, crits, and hardpoint requirements, well...

Uh, whut?

Edit: lets look at heat per second: 3 Llas = 3 x 1.65 = 4.95 while 2 cLPlas = 2 x 2.29 = 4.58. Erm... looks sort of close to me. You can discount range in a brawl, so (gasp!)... Situationally fair?

When you have to spend:
  • 3 extra tons
  • 1 extra hardpoint
  • 2 extra crit slots
  • 150M less range

To have the tiniest bit of a "DPS" edge (less than 0.5 Damage per second), you have lost when it comes to trade offs.

So I didn't buy this resistance pack, despite wanting the Grasshopper like mad.

Had some left over MC and got the flash sale today and .....the grasshopper is downright horrible!

What the mother man?

It's a literal walking CT. The only way I am seemly able to take damage to the LT or RT is if I accidentally catch a stray shot meant for another mech.

Worse I can't even hide behind the usual cover because the damn thing is SOOO tall. Which wouldn't be so bad if every LRM launched against me didn't strike the CT 90% of the time. I can get shot in the back by LRM's and still have it hit the front CT.

I knew IS energy vomit was going to be bad, simply because IS energy weapons "NEVER" deal full damage because they are always out of optimal range. I just didn't think it would be THIS bad.

So, can't take damage, can't deal damage, and can't jump. Another disappointment...and to top it off, missile perks on a single missile slot located in the head. Desk palm.

The proper interwebs term is face desk.

Lack of ghost heat on pulse lasers, higher mounted energy, potentially to be faster, can mount jumpjets as many as you want. also quoting another person: "Superior humanoid hitboxes" also the quirks for surprise surprise energy weapons... also lighter for CW.

I am as much joking as someone complaining the Timberwolf A is pay to win and until it's released for C-bills then it would be Powercreep meanwhile we got things like thunderbolts, grasshoppers, (and at the time: black knight) doing the same things if not better.

Oh dear god you are actually serious?

Go and build me a grasshopper that can compete with a timberwolf. Good luck!

High energy mountings? They are all on the lower torso... Not to mention the new side torso energy pod for the timber.

Hitboxes... really? Hopper is all CT.

I can't believe I actually responded to this... you must be trolling.

The Grasshopper is the Awesome of IS heavy mechs.

Too big, too easy to destroy, and covered with an excessive number of energy hardpoints that can't be effectively used becaues of the goofy heat system in this game. Top it off with Hoverjets and a pile of better options, and you have mediocrity in a can.

Most of the problems like at the root of the game, but why they can't scale mechs correctly - even after years of this silliness - is beyond me and really inexcusable at this point. In a match yesterday, we had 1 Hopper and a few Banshees... and the Grasshopper is taller than the Banshee. Great job there, PGI... ugh.

Never had any such problems with rolling damage thanks to its high mobility and sizable arms. Personally I love the hugeness of it, because it's also very lanky which counteracts how tall it is, and the height plus JJs makes it very easy for this mech to shoot over allies or objects. The mech is deceptively fast and agile with a big XL engine and JJs, making it easy to maneuver into and out of cover impressively quickly for 70 tons.

Another case of pilot error being blamed on the mech.

GHR-5N
This is just a quick build I did utilizing the power of quirks to get -10% on all E weapons and total -20% on all PPC's resalting in this build with a higher DPS, Firepower, and heat efficiency over an average Timberwolf which is a mech that is heavier then this and the build I just presented is 1 ton short ( go wild with your imagination)

GHR-5N simular build with smaller engine, better heat efficiency but same firepower.

These are just two really quickly made builds and doing something like this could ignore the PPC quirk for instead a "carbon copy" of the timberwolf meta builds by replacing those PPC's with large pulse lasers or er large lasers.

From memory these are as high at min as the majority of most Timberwolf weapons. from memory at min 2 of the weapons (heat and 2nd shoulder I believe) is quite high mounted.

Also this has higher armour then a timberwolf in some areas (thanks quirks!) even though it's 5 tons smaller and those armour points cost 0 armour and the 'large CT" is an advantage to most players including me. (meanwhile when you get a mech that has an average CT people cry it hates XL engines and stuff, huh)

Not trolling at all, in fact it's more likely that you are more likely trolling me due to random comments and petty insults thrown my way simply because you disagree with me. Either way. not really hear to stir rubble, simply stating the Grasshopper is powerful and I preffer to swat those overgrown bugs instead of neutralizing thunberwubs.

@Nightshade

Your Elo is showing.

My twolf distributes damage like a stalker, dances like a shadowhawk, hits as hard as the hopper at twice the range.

Hoppers kinda suck

Twolf = best heavy

It is known.

Let's get back to the real discussion now and forget what just happened. God I hate second hand embarrassment.

Your first build is slower than a timberwolf. You should probably be using mpl or ml, they won't sync together well. The PPCs whilst cool, have really slow velocity; hence why they are not used on non-velocity quirked mechs. They also have the 90m deadzone so not great for brawling. Due to IS XL it will die from loss of a side torso, not so with the timber.

Your second build is much slower than a timber and only slightly more heat efficient.

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...992bf043d1b6f47

Quick timber build. Faster, better synced weapons, longer range and significantly more alpha. It is also significantly more heat efficient at base, though quirks will help somewhat. Not to mention more survivable due to that lovely clan XL. Oh and no min-range.

The hopper is really really tall. You might want to have another look at it.

Its never a good idea to compare most heavies to a Timber Wolf anyway. The TW is arguably best Heavy mech in MWO at the moment.

Now if the TW didn't exist, and comparing the Grasshopper to other heavies, it is probably middle of the pack.

Either way, enjoy it as a decent laser vomit platform. It isn't a terrible mech, nor is it an exceptional mech. It is a competent mech that does laser vomit well enough, but is a bit hindered by the majority of hard points being low mounted and it's tall stature.

This. There's a lot of intense debate and argument in this thread as usual.

But this is the 7 word summary, QFT.

Running something like this and one on one against a timberwolf isn't that hard. Usually the fights are not one on one and you can stay out of sight while you cool off. I've got near 2 ot 1 k/d with this setup and in cw it's a lot higher cause enemies usually ignore this mech while assaults or thunderbolts are still standing.
I'm not saying it's the best mech out there but if you cannot get any results in that thing the problem isn't the mech.

At the OP, I have had the same issue with the CT, I have had matches where only my CT took damage and died by losing the CT. However it is one of the most safe XL mechs in the game. you could front load more of your armor that should help. it doesn’t even poke and hide well due to its size and low hard points. The only way i can get good games out of the grasshoppers is to change my play style into staying at the back of the team to drawl less agro and strafing for cover between alpha strikes

[I always get excited when i see an enemy grasshopper knowing I can take out the CT fast.
