Part of me just wants to walk away from these conversations and let people believe what they want. But another part of me is frustrated because my experience runs so counter to what a lot of people are saying here. I just don't get why people are so closed minded about builds and balance.
Let's take Flamers for example. I think Flamers are crap weapons. I've tried using them in the past and they just did terribly. As far as I can tell, there is no real use for them to justify their weight/heat. However if some guy came along with a flamer build and whooped the other team with them, I would happily change my mind.
Well, people have theories, but not everyone is willing to test their theories. But, theories can only go so far, and ultimately any theory should be tested to confirm/reject it. You're right about that.
Maybe other people are using LRMs on platforms not quirked for LRMs (or only slightly quirked for LRMs), and thus have a big difference in experience using them.
I know you've been driving the Hunchback with LRM quirks, perhaps the big DPS increase on that, combined with your speed to allow flanking around the enemy's hard cover and dipping in/out of cover rapidly to refresh locks (so you don't have to stare and face-tank), allows you to out-trade the enemy and have a lot of success. That head-mounted TAG also allows you to just peek only your head to TAG and refresh locks.
Perhaps a slower LRM platform would not be able to do that for various reasons: cannot get into position to flank easily, or even if it could, it cannot dip in/out of cover as nimbly as the Hunchback to avoid return fire when it tries to refresh its locks. Or perhaps without the cooldown quirks, it cannot out-trade the enemy. Or, perhaps it lacks a high-mounted energy hardpoint for the TAG. So, it requires greater exposure to refresh a lock with TAG.
Maybe you could test out your techniques on a Trebuchet, which is traditionally supposed to be a nimble Medium-class LRM platform.
I dunno, maybe the TBT-7M:
