Maybe 1,000,000 is a bit harsh. What would amounts of XP players would consider is tough, but worth it? Let's throw some numbers around
Yes, it is for CBills, that is what everyone wants but the requirements needs to be enough (including an MC or $ cost) that in my opinion makes the "H" make not a common sight, otherwise it will possibly eat into Premium Time purchases.
Players really need to earn a Hero status, but, than again I have to remind myself that PGI and MWO is a business and money calls the shots.
Cheers!

Playing for around 2 years and have earnt maybe 1.5 total.
You need 57250xp to master a mech.
50,000 on top of mastering wouldn't be entirely unreasonable, except that it locks a probable mc purchase in post mastering.
Ok, reality check on my behalf.
I only have
- 1 mechs with 1 million+ Jenner (O)
- 1 mech with 500k+
- 9 mechs with between 100k - 500k
- A fair few mechs getting close to 100k

Remember, hero mechs usually have worse hardpoints and a fixed camo pattern.

So yes, there is already a working precedent for this.

I don't have to have every chassis to play the game.

The 250k Seems like a middle point, but even that's pushing. We'd still be paying real money for this.

I'd only support this if you wouldn't be paying for it. I have my first Closed Beta mechs and none of them even have 500k to work with. There'd be no point in adding it in if what, you have it for one mech--- possibly? It goes in line with paying to alleviate the grind. If you Grind hard to slightly alleviate the future grind disproportionately less, nobody wins. Not the player for paying and grinding, and not PGI for making so little money off of the rarity at which these mechs are acquired.

You'd still buy them for A) the mech's hardpoints, If you do like the camo c) the lore behind them actually being heros.

I own the AWS Prettybaby, HGN HeavyMetal and the AS7 BoarsHead
I've played the AWS the most I truly love this ugly thing.
If I could get a 30% bonus to other mechs I wouldn't need the heroes but I'd still play them.

suppose because you don't, and you have a favorite that is a Premium, other people wouldn't be able to? Sucks for that guy who's favorite mech is the VND-1AA I guess. Just play something else and be happy!

Option 1 - Hero Upgrade:
Option 2 - Mini-Hero Upgrade:
Both of these wouldn't invalidate hero's and would create an additional revenue stream for minimal work.
Extra 1 - Champ upgrade:
Extra 2 - 'Hero' Weapons:
These extras would require minimal effort, be purely optional and provide no tangible benefit in terms of gameplay, just C-Bill (and XP) income.

Extra 2 - 'Hero' Weapons:[spoiler]Mastercraft Weapons.
Sold in Mechlab Store only.
Provides 2% bonus to C-Bill (and Experience?) generation.
Effect is cumulative. (i.e. 5 MC Weapons provides a +10% bonus).
Cost is MC Value x3.
Argument could be made for MC Value x2.
[spoiler]
I'd nudge each price for the first down like, 50 mc, but other than that I think this idea is great.

By having it at T*50, it makes it slightly more, keeping Hero Mechs relevant, and the numbers pretty even.
You could certainly tweak the numbers a little though.
I think Option 1 + Both Extra's would be fantastic, as it keeps Hero Mechs relevant, and allows expansion of the Hero status, as well as other optional small boosts.

All the while wishing they could pay someone to have a 30% cbill bonus on their favorite mech.
I lucked out and my favorite happens to the the founders catapult.
I think its a great idea that should make PGI some cash. Why not you get premium time for real money. no reason we cant add even more options for PGI to make money by providing the player more value. Its not like it's WOT gold rounds. All this does is lessen the grind for cash and thats the point of a F2P game.

As well, what about collector type players? I've over a hundred mechs now, with more on the way. I play them all too, though I have my favorites. I've got millions of XP, but probably no more than 400k on any particular mech. Needing an absurd XP total needlessly gates what should be a "pay2avoidgrinding" behind... Grinding. That just stupid.
