The third party software they were talking about are things like macros for getting UACs and AC2s to fire on a perfect delay, or syncing up Gauss Rifle charges with PPCs. Also included are obvious things like wallhacks and aimbots but I think those are less common in MWO than Counter Strike for example.

I actually don't think you can get banned for using macros... I don't care because I don't use them, but I was under the impression you don't get banned for that. It isn't like you need them to sync Gauss with PPCs though... always thought it was so funny that people thought you needed a macro to do that.

I cheated when I played Diablo 2. It was more a reactionary thing. I played hardcore mode for years, and after a while some script kiddies came along that had "trigger". It was a script that they'd activate after flinging a bunch of ranged attacks/etc in your direction that would instantly town portal them back to town and toggle aggression.

They almost always had hacked gear and would near-instantly kill you. The only safeguard was to play in private, password protected games or to get and use maphack and the "chicken" module which would disconnect you from the game any time someone togged aggression. It wasn't 100% effective in preventing your death by another player but it was at least 75% effective.

It only took like half a decade for the devs to patch the exploit and "rust storm" the hacked items.

Any time I see a company post "we are 100% sure the people we are banning are cheaters" I immediately feel very unsure about them. 100%? You should feel very confident exposing your methodology if you're saying it's 100% correct, but I don't see any such post from anybody at PGI explaining it. I mean, much bigger companies with much more experienced people have made huge mistakes when smashing down the banhammer. We can't trust these guys with UI usability or hit boxes but we trust them to 100% for sure identify only cheaters?

Any time I see a post like this attempting to cast doubt on the results of their testing, I immediately see a candidate for the list of people who were cheating. ;)

You don't PGI said it flat out, but it was years ago and I can't be bothered to dig it up.

Yay! Bring it PGI! Let's clean up this one-horse town!

To those asking about TeamSpeak3: Yes, TS3 is third-party software, but, since it does not affect gameplay, it should not result in a ban. The same should be true for streaming/recording software like Open Broadcaster Software. What PGI is talking about are the programs that can give you an in-game advantage by affecting gameplay. Spectating or non-participating programs should be in the clear.

If they're not, then I'll be in a heap of trouble too since I use both TS3 and OBS along with 98.71% of the rest of MWO gamers, lol.

Like I said before if players knew how easy it was to catch cheats they wouldnt even consider doing it. If a mistake, which isnt impossible, is made, all these game companies give avenues to adress the situation. Its not in their interest to screw players.

Mechwarrior is providing the playing field and the referee.

Wow, I see about 5 of these guys pretty regularly, the rest I don't even recognize.

Have to say though, of the 5 I actually recognize, only 2 have ever brought any suspicion..

Definitely interesting, I hope Russ goes into details about what exactly they were cheating with.

I only recognize a few names, which says a lot on how non-prominent that the majority of that list happen to be.

64 accounts!

So, any of them Gold Mech owners?

I really like the idea posted earlier - give away all the stuff they got.

:)
