Hello,

So far MechWarrior online looks fantastic, about to order my founders copy soon. But after watching all the videos I noticed something that's been bothering me. The cockpit view. One thing about MechWarrior 3 that I really enjoyed was how the cockpit view was zoomed back, letting you see a lot of the cockpit. But in the MWO videos you can barely see anything, which is semi-effecting immersion for me.

I've brought some screenshots for example.

It's a fairly large difference, and I vastly prefer MW3's. Will there be a way to atleast zoom out, or at least free look? If we're going to have first person view only let's do it right.

You know what I don't like about the Cockpit View?

In the Atlas, the lower bar for the window plate is crooked, that **** messes with my head yo.

I agree. Sitting a little back would be nice. I can't see how there wouldn't be freelook. The devs have talked before about information panels being on the actual inner-cockpit rather than in the HUD, so they'd have to provide SOME form of looking around.

I hope that wide screens can see more without looking left or right, such as using eyefinity 3 screen et cetera.

I hope that sometime they will make an MW game more like a real simulator. Think DCS Black Shark.
+100 items like toggles, switches, gauges, screens and buttons that can be interacted with through using the mouse rather than using the keyboard.

That would have been awesome. I can still remember the insane grin i had on my face as i did a cold start to take off in DCS Black Shark.
The feeling of immersion and absolute power was intense. But then again i couldn't keep the helicopter in the air for more than 3 minutes before i crashed.

The cockpit in that screen shot from MWO is off center, that is what drives me nuts.

Its supposed to be like you are sitting in the left eye. The cockpit glass is the same shape as the atlas' eye.

edit: or now that I look at it, right eye? I don't know. Its one if the eyes.

You guys realize the view port on the Atlas' cockpit is offset because the cockpit is housed in the left eye, right? The asymmetry bothers me a little, but I think it's a really nice touch.

I think that you are looking out of one of the eyes of the Atlas hence the crooked lower bar.

Nowadays, where one has to be glad if games feature a cockpit at all, i was rather pleasantly surprised by the quality of this games cockpits. There is a unique one for each mech, and it also seems to fit the mechs exterior perfectly. I think it's pretty good.

@OP Perfect example pics, they literally tell you why this change was needed.

Let's assume you are in a mechwarrior's place and sitting in a chair piloting the mech, if the cockpit looks like the one from MW3 from your chair two scenarios are possible:

1. You can't reach the buttons in front of you unless you lean forward nearly standing up from your chair (or have ~1,5-2 meter long arms).

2. You can reach the buttons but they are smaller than the tip of your finger.

The perception of the human eye dictates this unless we are affected by some optical illusion.
So since neither of the two situations are acceptable in a fight maybe those buttons in front of you are not that important, but why are they blocking your view then? Even if we assume whoever built the mech mostly counted on the neuro-helmets' vision why would he use such an ineffective design? He should've either gone with no windows, in other words structural weaknesses or with windows but then designing the cockpit to make the best use of them (in case the neuro-helmet fails or something).

Make no mistake the cockpits in MWO are not the most effective ones either but they are far closer to it than the one from your MW3 pic.

Ah yeah, you're right about the MW3 cockpit still not being viable. Although I still think MWO's cockpit's need to be adjusted none the less though, it seems as if the pilot is sitting far too high and close. Maybe not move it back to the extreme of MW3's, but move it back and down a little.

This is cool. Now if we just had a way to customize our cockpit, that would be cool...

I'm almost certain it's its right eye. In videos when the atlas fires lasers from its arms, you'll notice the right side laser originates a bit closer to the center of your view than the left one. But I thought, from the way the bar was crooked, that it was the left eye for the longest time.

Its not the cockpit off-center, it is the in-cockpit (but non-HUD) displays. They are asymmetrical, which gives the impression of your being off-center - even though you as the pilot are not.

Now in the Atlas, as others have rightly pointed out, you are sitting behind one of the eyes. That bugged me at first, till I realized every other interpretation of an Atlas cockpit in previous games must be off: where else would you be able to see out?

I think screen real estate is too precious for a permanently visible cockpit the size of those MW3 examples. Sure, I want to look around my cockpit too but the novelty soon wears off when it impedes my overall sight picture.
