I liked the MechCommander games better than the MechWarrior style shooty games (especially the later ones, less said about the xbox version the better).
I really want to enjoy MWO, and they seem to have the right 'feel', but I don't know yet whether I'll like the gameplay.

I played both Mechcommander 1 and 2.

Overall I felt like #1 was more chore than game. The difficulty was so ludicrously high that every mission had to be replayed multiple times to figure out the 'optimal solution' and several relied on fore-knowledge of tricks or shortcuts in order to pull off without unsustainable losses.

I was actually involved in the beta of Mechcommander 2. I preferred this game over #1, it felt a lot more spontaneous and game-like, and I was able to bash my way through with a minimum of trial and failure. The low-budget live action stuff was endearing as well, and whoever played Katrina Steiner in that is pretty much my mental image of the character :D Biggest problem with the game was the goofy AI that didn't react properly to being kited around.

My utopian vision for the Mech franchise would be to see Mechwarrior and Mechcommander merged into one no-holds-barred title. You'd have a planning phase where you check out the mission intel and tell your forces what you want them to do, including a wealth of non-mech assets (like infantry, vehicles, air power, and even orbital bombardment if appropriate). For example you would assign an infantry team to enter the theater at insertion A, move to point B, and at MM:SS attempt to capture and hold this sensor outpost. Once you'd gotten everything marked out on this "action plan", you'd go into the combat phase where you pilot your mech through the battle as everything you planned plays out, with the ability to react to what's going on. So if your infantry guys run into an unexpected tank platoon, they could report this and you could respond and wipe out the tanks so the infantry could continue to seize the outpost. A heavy emphasis would be placed on all the non-mech assets, because mechs are supposed to be rare and special and that simply doesn't come across in any of the games we've seen which are entirely about mechs and a few treads to shoot at. By making mechs the biggest things on the field instead of the only thing, the feeling of power and responsibility should be greatly amplified.

64 bit ppl wanting to play MC:G/MC:1 look here :D

first!

get the CD or download it from http://www.shacknews...-gold-free-game (legal and if your not sure what to do with teh file, download 7zip it is free)

extract or mount the cd on your PC, yes the installer will fail! no i do not care, do not run the installer!! the installer is for call of duty punks!

do this!

copy the contents from the cd to a folder on your drive

run mcx.exe

!!WIN!!
saves etc all work if your game loads up with a funky rainbow color, just move the mouse a bit and it will go away. sideffect of direct x

BTW MC:G was the best, then MC:1 and then MC2. 2 is awesome dont get me wrong but 1 had so much more challenge, someitmes it felt like mechs were made of paper and you had to cuddle them tight!

I am with Momaw, give me mechcommander/mechwarrior in a battlezone style format! !

Still remembering how much fun MC2 was, and thank god I still have the disk to play it.

One really neat feature about MC2 was its vast encyclopedia. I swear, I could get lost in it.
So guys, what pilots do you otfen utlilise? I always bring out Hammer, Longshot, Twitch and Palerider with me.

I played both MechCommanders...
And I agree that the first was better programmed. Which is a shame, because MC2 has better graphics and more turrets (normal & hidden), buildings, vehicles, etc... Plus a nice map editor...
Unfortunately, both games falled into the trap of Assault only when endgame, due to the tonnage/number of Mech spots limitations...
Also, these 2 games made me realize how important it is to bring a Raven with you as often as possible...

I still remember the intro of the 1st MC... "Panther, did you missed us?..."

Played 'em both.
Love 'em both.
This is the type of games I call time-killer. You never get enough of it. Amazingly replayable and never boring.

Cyclops not a decent enough Electronics-Assault Mech?

there were a number of points frustrated me with MC2 largely the A(I) it made the X2/3 AI look brilliant by comparison, and it's pretty tragic in its self.

the perk system bugged me a lot too.

'laser specialisation' for instance, didn't apply to ER/Clan/Heavy lasers.
Autocannon spec's only applied to the stock ones and not the ultras of any description.

drop tonnage was a bit of an annoyance as well, none of the mission particularly required anything substantial I don't remember dropping with a single assault, (salvaged a few in-mission) that and of course, claymore popping out the water in his trusty atlas.
the pod-space/heat fitting setup was pretty funky tho, seemed to work alright.

<EDIT> ohyeah, still love to play them tho.

ohyeah, AC/20's and Gauss rifles were nowhere near as potent as they should have been.

The first one was the best one. I didn't care for the transition to 3D. ::shrugs::

I loved the second one, but failed to ever get my hands on the first. One day I'll bother with hunting a copy down. But christ did the second have it's obvious and near fatal faults.

If you like MC2, then try this : http://www.hard-ligh...php?board=210.0
It's Mech Commander Omnitech, a highly improved version of MC2 and it's freeware.

I loved mechcommander. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, the times that made me sweat the most were right when those sweet enemy mechs fell down.

Were we gonna get that sweet salvage?

suddenly..

KaBoom! "u mad bro?"

then I was all like "oh no you didn't!" and prompted to restart the mission. Every....freaking....time
