Why on earth you would want to use them though is beyond me. I'll never understand why people sign up to play a game and then try to automate it so that they don't have to play it.

I'm not sure you understand how Macros work...

Macros are the spinner hubcaps of MWO I guess.
Sure, we all believe what you say just like the leader of 66ah used to tell us underhive how its done too.

More BS per kilometer than any man should have to bear.

Short version: you can use macros in MWO. Prepare for some folks to get on your case over it, though. Then again, the MWO playerbase has never actually needed proof to accuse other players of cheating, so what else is new.
If you're one of those guys who can't get along without macros, go for it. Just leave your man card at the door with the rest of the macro folks

Of course such people could never understand these things. I always think of the 14 year old playing monopoly with his little sister and palming cash under the table.
Yep, such a badass.
I must be cheating along with all the other people who gain a significant advantage by having large high resolution monitors, decent CPUs, and GPUs, that allow us to run the game with high FPS in graphics modes that lets us see mechs further away than we can shoot them. Because I own a Track-IR and can look out my side canopy and keep my eyes on the opponents while twisted away so they can only blast a shield arm, I must be cheating. Well and the Track-IR means I can glance up and easily spot enemy UAVs... again, I must be cheating.
Maybe I should play MWO on a 5 year old $300 laptop so that my manhood isn't called into question.

They handily violate PGI's own "anything that provides an advantage" rule by allowing for consistent sustained fire from DAKKA that most humans couldn't hope to mimic.......so the average player not using a macro is going to be at a disadvantage playing against a macro user if both are using the same load out on the same chassis.

work more against me, since it's charges always at the worst time.
marco's do not help it only makes it over complicated.

Not questioning buying a decent rig or even stuff like a gaming mouse if you enjoy the game. I built a new rig myself and justified it by saying I can run CAD on it and experiment with 3d printing. Stricken by practicality I guess. Macros though seem to run counter to fair play. Bad enough many poor buggers are stuck with old machines to play on so I am not going to extremes. I will get as good as i can with what pgi offers and reason allows.

You can download macro software for free... so I still don't understand how it is not available to everyone....

It's not a big deal to me, but I can definitely see where the angst comes from. Yeah, there's probably more advantage to be had from spending 5k on the sort of gaming set-up a god would envy, but that sort of thing is unavoidable and something people who play on five year old 300-dollar laptops are pretty much resigned to. Macros, on the other hand, reek of 'my computer is playing for me', especially when one can program a long series of complex, tricky actions that the computer will execute with flawless 100% precision every single time.
It's significantly less of an issue in MWO than it is in a typical MMO, where one can press one button to activate a minute-long perfectly calculated DPS rotation, do so again a minute later, then do so again a minute later and clear whatever it is they're fighting. That sort of horse p!ss grates on every last one of my nerves, but the dakka timing and Gauss charge macros which are, so far as I know, the only prevalent use of the tool in MWO aren't worth getting huffy over.
Gauss macro people are honestly losing functionality on the weapon in order to get around the fact that they can't wrap their brains around the charge-release mechanic, and dakka macro builds are sacrificing front-loaded burst damage for gatling jollies. If they want to do that for the lulz, or if someone just cannot use Gauss rifles without a one-click button to use, whatevs. What's it hurting? If they want their computer to play for them, have at it.

Using that logic, you can buy hacking programs off of the internet, they are available to anyone that has the money to spend on them (much like giant monitors, multiple monitors, multi-button mice etc).
Doesn't make it right to use them though............the only difference, as stated by others above, is that PGI absolutely cannot prevent the use of Macros so they are allowed, hacks can be policed, so they aren't allowed.

As for those saying real men don't use macros, all I can say is: You're sexist.
