Begun questioning whether I should even bother chatting in pugs, I don't think most people have VOIP turned on. Do you have it on?

I have it on. If the commander is not a complete idiot, I listen. But I don't speak.

What evidence do you have that most people disable it?

The player base is mostly lazy casuals(too lazy to even go into config menus) or people who actually want to win in CW and would never voluntarily remove a tool even if running TS on top.

Did I miss a very large third group that disables it?

There's just very obvious things like a number of the team ignoring warnings that we're being outflanked in large numbers, or telling people where a fleeing ecm mech is and people still going in the opposite direction etc etc I dunno if people are simply ignoring the warnings or not hearing them at all.

Pilots are independent actors, you have no idea what is going on in their minds. Your info may or may not influence their tactical actions. I rather not have acknowledgement chatter clogging the comms.

Location, target type and component weaknesses are good info. If you want more discipline join a premade.

I'm not asking for acknowledgement, I'm talking about looking on the map and seeing them going in the wrong direction etc etc.

Mines turned on, but more than half the time there is so much white noise and other crap going in the mic users end its rarely of any use, I know its not PGI's fault but cheap hardware, because there are people I can hear crystal clear, those ones I listen to, if they actually make sense.

Those that rage, and complain about not following their dumb suggestions get muted

I have it always on. I always listen. I do not speak (though i am a pretty quick typer and can usually respond via text, if needed).

I'm a bit self-conscious about my voice, that's all.

You can tell if someones got VOIP turned off - the little speaker symbol is gone.

I know I don't turn it off, but I do ignore people quite frequently. I listen, but decide for myself if they're right or wrong. Sometimes I'm wrong, and they're right, thems the breaks. I have information they don't, and they have information I don't.

In short, i appreciate any information people share, but unless someone has been actually leading the PUG (which is AWESOME, by the way) I'm filtering what they say quite a bit. If I know the speaker, that really influences what I do (and how much credence I give them) but there are a LOT of would-be commanders out there with no clue whatsoever.

For example, you mentioned a flanking force spotted. If the bulk of the team is going in one direction, and I split off to meet the flanking force you mention... maybe one or two other players do too. Then we get crushed, the rest of the players eventually meet the other team. We were better off in the murderball.

This is PUG play, as opposed to group play. You need to recognize the times where what your team is doing isn't optimal, but know that changing what they are doing is largely impossible and attempts to do so will only partially succeed and result in a fractured team spread all over creation (the single best losing strategy in a PUG match).

I never use any in-game voice chats. I use TS when I am playing with somebody that I want to hear talk. Having puggers yell in my ear rarely beneficial to my experiences

It's still possible they don't speak english - or at least not good enough that they understand muffled commands of sometimes low (sound)quality.

There's this, too. I'm entirely an english speaker, but very often I don't hear what someone is saying - they're drowned out by sound effects in game, they aren't speaking clearly enough for the sometimes low quality, my children are talking to me, any number of things.

Sound quality and volume are too low, 90% of the time can hear that someone is talking but cant understand any of it. (And I have tried many many times to adjust volume levels and settings.)

Some people come out loud and clear and others are muffled and impossible to understand.

The other night some dude keyed up and you could hear serious porn sounds in the background. Most guys I ever heard in chat after in one match.

Maybe we need porn sounds?

I keep it disabled. Partially self-containment, partially because I got sick of open/free comms back on the Xbox, never again. If I want to use comms, I will open my own teamspeak client.

I have it on just because sometimes good things are said. Most of the time not though. I'm perfectly fine typing in game when playing solo. I just don't feel like hooking up the headset most of the time.
