PGI would do better to just remove CW and replace it with "Extended Assault Mode" where the Top 3 Factions along with the Top 3 Units are displayed. Each top faction gets a carrot, and each top unit gets an extra special carrot at the end of each month or season.
The only reason planets would matter is if there was more lore involvement or simulation aspects. Since the current state and future state isn't really addressing these issues, they may as well shelve it and focus more on e-sport/comp-like play.

Still, his point was that the current CW system might as well be e-sports for all the fluff & depth it has.
There's no reason to fight for one particular planet over another, or for one faction over another (aside from changing the faction rewards, which PGI experimented with for awhile), aside from the short descriptions when picking contracts.
There's no story supplied within the game itself (I guess the assumption was players would supply it ourselves via sarna & such?), there's no tangible reason to fight for or own a planet - the whole CW structure right now, really just feels like a loosely arranged group tournament that never ends and has participation rewards as opposed to win/lose rewards. In a word, hollow.
If we had just a couple of these things to build on, it would be a great leap forward for CW. Me, I'm not holding my breath until other major updates with the game happen (which they will, within the next few months).
