If we get to see the tiers I want to know what my Elo was. That way I can tell how bad this new system really is.

Most of the "pro" players I've played with don't flaunt their abilities, they just play. At the very "worst" they will join a comp unit and let their tag or name do the talking.

I support opt-in.

Exactly!

If anything, most of the "pro" crowd has been dedicated to helping players under them.

I should be able to see my tier and be able to opt-in if I want to. I have some friends that would be in the high tier groups. They don't want anyone to see what tier they are. So let the players pick.

Honestly, I don't think we should give people any incentive to cheat. By publicly displaying the pilot skill rating you will give people motivation to do just that. If you really do commit to having this feature make sure you are pre-prepared for an influx of people who will cheat at this game. Free to play games like APB have such rating systems and all its done for them is attract a very shady player base that is known for being highly competitive and unethical in their gaming practices. I do not wish to see MechWarrior Online, the game that I loved playing since closed beta, to suffer the same fate. Please reconsider your choice and do not publicly display these ratings.

I can see one benefit of displaying the tier in game as a way to find players of an equal skill level to group with.

Is there any information about how the match maker works in regards to the tiers when grouped?

While I am sure there are players who would look upon it as a right to brag etc, it also comes with some pretty big expectations in the matches and does put a target on your head.
Generally I haven't experienced this sort of behaviour much anyway.

Personally I don't think it would be a problem to display it and if we had a choice on how, I would like to suggest a little insignia icon to display next to your name in the game social menus and team lists based on the faction you are aligned with.
Great stuff in the lore that could be used from the various books., like the mech points for the clans.
Here is a post from 3 years ago that had some great designs for Steiner.

Making it an option in the titles/badges section seems like the place to put in the functionality.

If it isn't going to be displayed, then where will we be able to see it?

Question: is PSR going to be global per person or is going to be specific to each weight-class or even to specific mechs/chassis?

Wondering as PSR could be artificially depressed by other factors (such as being in the middle of leveling/outfitting a new chassis).

I will not participate in this poll. My answer is not listed.
Not divulged, even to the player himself/herself.
Good players know they're good, they don't need a computer calculation to tell them.

  • The only way a Tier set would make sense in the first place is if there was a "Hardcore/League" mode to play where every player was there for the gold and not just the fun of it.

A very good point, actually. Without a dedicated competitive mode, a rank is not a just comparison of the player's best possible skill, only a summary of their overall gameplay, including all the matches where they're grinding new chassis, playing for-fun non-competitive builds, or otherwise screwing around. Ranks are not representative of skill except for the people that play comp-style every single match.

Benefit (sole universal benefit): recruiting players to units that have comparable skills.

Drawbacks: Elitism, fostering exlusionary behaviours, encouraging toxicity (say hello to Moba-land where that is one of the big catalysts: now imagine that with the current policing level), short term bad runs/loosing streaks getting otherwise solid players dumped on/overlooked, doing nothing to change the "underhive" in a positive way beyond shaming tier 5 players publicly.

I vote Opt-In; it lets those folks who want to show their tier being able, still lets folks use it for recruiting or showing temporarily, but otherwise lets a lot of the folks just itching for a reason to tantrum (as already seen in this thread, who don't understand if they're tier 1, they won't be playing with low tiers anyhow outside of organized/group play) to have no real ammo to spaz about to folks who have it hidden. That it may let them temporarily show it, just to get them to STFU when they're higher but have it hidden, but again, that's not exactly making it a benefit so much as cancelling a negative out with a dubious positive.

Best of both worlds, but honestly, public is far more of a detriment than a benefit to the community, and MUCH more of a detriment to new players when you're already being matches with folks of comparable rankings as per the system.

Edit: I don't go through life with rose-tinted idealistic glasses after reading these forums for a long time and dealing with the community in game, I'm 100% certain the "it will help train lower tier players and identify them for needing help from the community" is going to be the exception far more than the rule of "time for man-baby reason #2 to insult others" like it generally is.

If this thread alone was an indicator in of itself, I'd say hell no. You've already got folks dead-set on wanting it as ammo to flame others, and it -will- only increase with it public and sure as hell isn't going to encourage new players to stick around (a private metric is good enough). Tell me how that's a positive? I don't go around handing children matches and -not- expect them to light something on fire they shouldn't. ;) Given units already notorious for these behaviours exist, I'm not a fan of giving them a gas can to go along with said matches.

I'm also in agreement that the PSR should be per weight class as well; there are all around pilots out there, but many that do far better in specific weight classes, a universal PSR doesn't really address that.

Look, if a unit wants to see your tier, you're going to have to show it to them with a screenshot or something.

Questions:
Does self-esteem really depend on what tier a game decides to place you in?
Is it not fair that a team that relies on a player to play well to win, can see how proficient a member of their team is?
Wouldn't the tier 1/2 players display their tier anyway?
Wouldn't it mean that a player that didn't publicly display their tier has something to hide? i.e Tier 4/5

I am a bit disappointed that a majority of players are voting for optional display.
It, in my opinion, should be a badge of honor, proudly displayed and an endgame goal(which are few in a game such as this) to work towards.

Personally, I'd like this to be displayed for a short period of time to see where everyone's at...see what happens. Then go back to hidden and get more feedback.
