Innate mech features include hardpoints (number, location, mounting height), hitboxes, engine cap, total tonnage, and Endo/FF (if Omnimech). If a mech is well-designed such that it is effective without any external help, then it's a safe bet for you to buy it. Such effective designs are almost "nerf-proof" unless Paul seriously unleashes his full fury...
...But if a mech is only viable when external help like quirks are applied, then you should be careful of pendulum swing balancing.
You really should try something like a non quirked dragon, with lbx and lrms or so. And when you play that a while and get your **** handed to you enough, you can maybe reach zen in mwo. you know, playing for fun and all that.

It's being "adjusted" on the 8th. It's a little late to start trolling with it.

To me it sounds like theyre going to drop all the mechs into a Battle Value system and then thatll be used to "make better matches".
Then in the undefinable future, quirks and such will be rebalanced.
Id love to see a massive rebalance, but man I just feel in meh old heart, that the MG, Flamer, SRM2, AC2, Orion, Victor, Vindicator, etc, will still all be totally useless.
Except that isn't what is happening. The MWO battle value (something that Russ admits he should have never used "Battle Value") isn't going to be used for making matches. They have said this repeatedly. It's an internal system used to provide an objective measure for how and what quirks a mech will receive, again something that has been explained several times in the Town Hall and twitter, etc.
It's not TT Battle value, it isn't used for creating matches, and has zero relation to the principals of TT Battle Value. The rebalance is a re-quirkening and that is happening on the test servers some time this month potentially.

Fooled me once with original Clan release, twice with Wave 2... and what I've gained from it is that whoever balances things uses a sledgehammer for precision work and uses a table napkin for a drawing board.
It's your time and money, so spend it how you see fit... but from a common sense perspective... what is the rush to spend imaginary money that you spent a lot of time gaining on things that will change very soon, and you have no idea as to how they'll change?
Seems like a huge gamble on variables none of us understand or know anything concrete about how the rebalance will impact each individual mech.

I will be most weary of mechs that are heavily dependent on quirks on any given day due to the variability of quirks in the first place.
However, even with the rebalance, I would expect there to continue to have those mechs that would be the favourite of the metas. So there would always be a 4N or the 5SS, except that it would be just another chassis.
How then?
Hack meta and just buy what u want to pilot. This may only be applicable to those steeped in lore. For those that have only come into BTech rcently and have no idea what the Celestials are or what industrial mechs are, I would think the best meta would be the mech of choice. How else will they decide? They do not have the thrill of wanting to configure their own widow maker when they don't even know who Natasha is.

As stated before, unless the mech you are buying is geometrically perfect (high hard points, good speed, etc) where it'd be fine even with 0 quirks, then you should probably wait. Right now I'm still buying mechs to round off the 3 variants of mechs I already own.

mind you, nobody likes a big change in a game like this, nobody, and it's almost always to the worst too
if they make a big change it may need months till the storm ends and all the rough places will be polished and the game gets to even the current level of players' satisfaction, i dunno how the game could survive it
