It seems A LOT of people dislike Mechassault 1 & 2 very very very VERY much. Now that is understood. It really is not a "true" Battletech or Mechwarrior title and strays away from what most people would of expected. With that said, however, remember that this game was developed for the xbox and was catered towards casual gamers and was definitely focused on arcade gameplay. I really dont think a full fledged mech simulator would have been possible given the limited functionality of the xbox (and it's controller) and that the general hardcore simulator aspect of Mechwarrior would not cater to newcomers. I mean lets face it, Mechwarrior isn't as easy to get into as popular games such as WoW, CoD, or Halo. You must have a love for mech sc-fi because otherwise the hard controls and relatively steep learning curve involved in Mechwarrior games (and sims in general) is just too steep for casual gamers. Mechassault is really one of the games that helped with the success of the Xbox, and honestly I liked it. It wasnt mechwarrior, but it was fun. I could play with my brother and friends on the couch and have a good fun time. Sure, my "Ragnarok" was total BS, but it was fun to shoot sh** with it. (Plus I could sit on the couch comfortably with my girlfriend.)

All in all, I just feel the general hate towards Mechassault is unwarranted. It wasnt trying to be a MechWARRIOR title, it was MechASSAULT. It was bound to disappoint sim fans, but honestly I prefer a new, creative approach to a stagnant franchise than a failed Xbox sim that would get lost in time and bad reviews.

I just hate it when devs are like "Well we have this great idea for some gameplay, but we don't have any fluff to back it up. But we do have this box of licenses our publisher acquired and lets languish in obscurity now... so we'll just pick one at random, tell people it's a 're-imagining' and call it a day!"

See, it's this kind of statement filled with blind animosity and ignorance towards Mechassault and what it was SUPPOSED to be that really ****** me off. You provide really no reason why you have such hostility towards this game, and like I said, this is NOT a Mechwarrior game and wasn't supposed to be. It was an arcade game and it was aimed at a completely different audience than Mechwarrior. So instead of just bashing this game and taking it of context, could you look at it fairly?

Now I think this a is a valid complaint, but out of curiosity, did you play Mechassault?

Tell that to Steel Battalion.

But uh, not Steel Battalion : Heavy Armor. Though I imagine that was a tough one to get into with the controller price and a game so hardcore it makes any Mechwarrior look like Super Mario Bro's.

This is probably true. It was simple and in some ways stupid maybe but it was one of the first LIVE titles and I believe the first one where you could shoot things. It did show a bit of what the system could do. Moto GP and more so Halo 2 sort of mopped the floor with it on that one but it had a place in the systems growth. Honestly I liked the second one more as the teams were not allowed to take just anything and the VTOL dropping supplies made for a nice logistics mechanic. The maps were arcady gun-line friendly in some cases though the most damage generally went to the team with the better supply line. Overall Lonewolf ironically was fun as a team game.

As a Battletech game there were some weird things... the giant Madcat sculptures were just... I have no idea what really. Silly mostly to think that ancient statues would depict rather recent mechs. Hacking was silly, some of the weapons like the timer missiles were just...whatever. I did like the Raptor though. Never understood why they made a Blake mech and named it after an existing Omnimech but it may have been one of the best things to come out of the game.

I don't really look as Mechassault being related to Battletech anymore than I look at Super Mario as being related to Plumbing. Mario was still fun.

I really enjoyed the MechAssault series. They were deffinitly an arcade game from the outset and shouldnt be compared to any of the MechWarrior series.
It would be like comparing MS Flight Sim to Crimson Skies imho.

I totally agree with BTone, and it's these type of people and their attitudes that might get this game to fail because they don't want to see any newcomers in here at all. They're almost as bad as Star Wars fans... probably are Star Wars fans. I've never played the game and I regret that I never did, but I'm sure it's a really fun game if a much more simpler version of MechWarrior, hell I'd love to get some friends and just blow **** up without having to deal with hour long mech creation and tons of micro-managing that can turn plenty people off pretty quick. I just downloaded MechWarrior 4 at another members suggestion and started playing, I haven't played a MechWarrior game in nearly 15 years, so I had no idea what I was doing, and died on the first mission a few times, and I didn't even learn how to turn my torso until the second mission. I was almost ready to quit, and I love Mechs, something like that would definitely not cater to the usual xbox player.

LOL, disregarding the star wars fan thing, (I'm not going there...) that's exactly what I'm saying. It takes TIME (like a lot) to master Mechwarrior games. I thinked I aced the Mechassault controls in the first mission or two.

Let me be the first to say that it was NOT a terrible game.

However then let me say that I have come to realize it is not a true mech warrior game (similar to the old SNES MW with the isometric 3rd person Mad Cat view). I believe it is for this reason nearly everyone hates the Mech Assault games.

Let it be known however that until I came to the forums I have forgot it existed, therefore it's a bad Battletech game :/

Well, I kind of liked the MechAssault games. They were fun,and easy to get into, and they had pretty awesome music. That said, they could've done a whole lot better with the games. When they were making MechAssault 2, they hinted that you'd be able to change load-outs and some other things to bring the series closer to the MechWarrior games, which would've been awesome. This, of course, was scrapped in favor of the same gameplay and lackluster storyline. So, yeah, it wasn't a bad series, but there was a LOT of potential that the developers didn't spend time on. It was obviously just trying to make money off of the title of the game, and nothing else.

That said, sometimes it's fun to load up MechAssault and blow up tons of mechs. I mean, the MechWarrior games are kind of difficult to grasp. I've been playing them for I don't know how many years, and I still suck at them. Seriously, I can't beat MW4 Mercs, I really suck at these games. So, MechAssault allows me to pilot a Mad Cat (TIMBERWOLF) and blow stuff up without the annoyance of dying ten times per mission.

Yes, I played the first one. I remember thinking it was okay back in the day, probably because I had read the reviews and knew it would be nothing like a Mechwarrior game. Although now I can't recall a single thing from it. And I guess that's my real complaint, that it was a completely forgettable third person shooter whose main selling point was "omg giant robots rocket launchers lasers cool" rather than the gameplay or anything like that.

Maybe I'm being unduly harsh(whatever the opposite of nostalgia goggles is) because I googled the final boss fight from Mechassault 2 for another topic. Seriously, Korn played during the final battle? I want to die. :P

The games weren't the best by all means, but I do think they do get unfair treatment. And generally, I think they were pretty solid titles. I mean I really enjoyed the multiplayer for whatever reason.

Fair enough. Haha, that last boss was kind of a joke when you think of the scenario and Korn really isnt my cup of tea. But I remember that last battle being really f'ing hard for what ever reason. Maybe because I was too busy laughing...

I had the first, and I rented the second one.

I enjoyed them as games you could sit down and play with a friend in splitscreen, but I was 8 years old back then, of course. If I played them now, I probably wouldn't like them.
