I wouldn't think It would be too hard to to move away from hexes if they really wanted to, there were the nonhexbased miniatures rules included for as long as i can remember after all. Either way i'll be ok with it.
What is this from Scout Derek?

It never got out of closed beta, and due to management failed miserably.
Doesn't matter what happened to the game really, in the end the statement that there hasn't been a tactical turnbased BT game in 20 years is false, MWT existed, no matter how short. It was a game people could play (I played it quite a few times personally) and it was a tactical turnbased BT game.

Somehow I had watched that and completely forgotten everything that was in it.
Because it's not really that compelling with lots of MECH action, its some dudes with MECHS as a background or backdrop action, not really that awesome.
Which is why it takes me forever to get through some of the Battletech novels. It really is NOT that interesting to read about how harrowing it is to work at the docks in a spaceport, or to be freight haul pirate, where you aren't doing any mech combat at all. Oh yes vacuum, cold, dying alone among the stars, so sad. So not compelling.

It's actually what interest me the most in the Battletech Novels.
There is all the backround where you see that not everyone got a battlemech and theses things ARE deadly and rare.
You see that the fight is not just only on the battlefied and with the same weapon.
Imagine a Star Wars novels where you have non stop action with the same guy and the same lightsaber with no break at all. That would be boring in ten second flat.
Sur I read a Battletech novel to read battles against battlemechs. But not just that. I read it also for the lore.
I particulary enjoyed for example the wedding leading to the 4rth sucession war.

Except the concept art looks suspiciously similar to MW:T actual in game did.
Just because they change how MW:T functions to take it away from a F2P style doesn't mean the underlying code base isn't one and the same, it would be a smart move imo.
Well, the only problem I see with that theory is if they bought MW:T, they'd actually have a working game to demo, they wouldn't need to show only concept art. They also wouldn't need 2 years turn around time, because building on something where most the heavy lifting was already done doesn't take so long.
Just imagine if someone bought MWO, they wouldn't show concept art for it and that's it. They've got a (mostly) working game already. Even if they planned to shut it down and do a complete redesign, they would most likely still show mechs running around shooting each other as a proof of concept, especially if they were trying to drum up funding. It's just good advertising.

From FAQ:
MechWarrior Tactics was a completely different game developed by a different company. There is no connection between the games or the companies.
First, we’re really sorry that happened and we understand why you might be hesitant to back BATTLETECH for that reason.
However, we have three reasons why we’d like you to consider backing us. One, this game’s development is led by Jordan Weisman, the creator of BattleTech, so it will be an authentic BattleTech experience. Two, it’s being developed by his company, Harebrained Schemes, who worked passionately to make the Shadowrun series an authentic Shadowrun experience. And three, Harebrained Schemes has a solid track record for delivering Kickstarter projects that their backers are happy with.
Dont think they would lie.

Not necessarily because the MW:T got as far as essentially being what they are self funding (Skirmish with no story)
seriously for a moment why would you offer a game that only has Skirmish for a total of 250k. ...it would certainly cost more than that just to develop the game that far from scratch.
If people know you have a functioning game they are going to question the funding goals.
MWT was far from perfect and would require an extensive rework away from the F2P model and it's terrible mech design. But the underlying work the engine work would be useful as a small leg up on production.
They may have even brought it to see where it was and and see if it was usable
why would anyone else buy it; knowing it can't be used or released as Mech warrior or Battletech without a licence agreement
What you guys need to realise is I'm not saying this is a bad thing; it's actually a very good thing in multiple ways and it reasonably makes sense
