The so called bad mechs are nothing but a few players giving opinions that others seem to cling to. I can do well in any mech I pilot, especially in a capable team.

Tell that to the Commando-1D. Possibly the worst combination of hard points + location of any mech in the game. Also terrible quirks because having 2M slots on your CT isn't bad enough.

I was just going to reply to the op. Take a Commando for a spin then come let everyone know how it went. :)

I have to disagree with the statement that "bad mechs are nothing but opinions."

Explain to me, objectively, how an Awesome is better than a Zeus, for example?

Note that I won't count Quirks since those change all the time. The Zeus has: better geometry (smaller), ballistics options, and a higher engine cap. The Awesome has... um.... greater twist range? Objectively, the Awesome is junk compared to the Zeus.

Now, Quirks can change this, and maybe, someday, in the Great Rebalancing, all mechs will somehow be unique, balanced, and fun, but to say that "all mechs are equal, it's just the pilot" is simply not true objectively. Heck, I have many hours in my Awesomes and yet my K/D ratio in my not-fully-leveled Zeuses is already higher than it ever was in the fully-leveled Awesomes. The brutal reality is that the Zeus handles like an Awesome, but I can use a Gauss Rifle or a pair of AC5's, and my hitboxes are better - no contest as to which mech wins.

Thats the thing, Zeus are better thann Awesomes? maybe/ yes/ for you/ not by a chance... can work as answers, depending on whos piloting... maybe some guy is very good piloting an awesome...

Awesome is a bad mech? no / compared to XXXXX mech? yes, whats works for you doesnt always work for others the same way, thats the good thing in this game, customization, fiting a mech to a pilot playstile or vice-versa in some cases...

i always say, theres no bad mechs, only bad pilots, or maybe a pilots thats dont fit a mech playstile

i have bit over 100 mechs, i play all of them, doing bad or good is more about the course of the match than the mech i pilot...

I only use the best mechs:

Locusts
Commandos
Spiders
Urbies
Cicadas
Griffins
Shadowhawks
And occasionally a raven or a Cataphract

I'm 95% a Vindicator pilot for the last 6 months. I even have three VND-1AAs. I really fell in love with the PPC jumper. I used to pilot Griffons and Panthers quite a bit but lately trying to get close for SRMs without all my armor stripped off hasn't been that much fun.

Every blue moon I try a heavy or assault and after a quick beat down I'm back to mediums. I definitely enjoy having a bit of speed.

Just wanted to see if there was anyone else who purposely go against the META to prove that even the "worst" of the mechs can still do good.

Not to prove anything, but I do regularly (well, as regularly as I play these days, which isn't really regular at all) drop in my beloved Commandos.

And the Commando has to be one of the worst 'mech chassis in the game. Sure, there are variants of other chassis that are worse (SDR-5V, I'm looking at you...), but on the whole, they suffer from:
  • Four hard points. Always. Not one or two or three, nor five or even six. Four.
  • One, two, or three of those hard points are missile hard points (except on the COM-TDK hero). The 1D has two (!) in its CT. Not. Optimal. And we all know missiles suck in this game. Too weak and too spread, even at ranges as close as 30 meters they spread over several hit locations.
  • 240 max engine means getting shafted on heat capacity and dissipation due to PGI's insistence on FauxDubs.
  • Being 25 tons means 60 points less armour than the FS9 and Jenner (who, incidentally, also have 6-8 hard points, not four). It also means never having enough weight to have a proper ammo load out for the amount of missile tubes you need.
  • All of the above combine to a 'mech that's hard-pressed to deliver much over a 20-point alpha. Spread over most of the target.
  • Speed and agility, which should be its saving grace, means little when even a stock Atlas can track it by turning alone (at 50 meters)
So yeah. I pilot bad 'mechs. They're called Commandos, and I love them. But they're not good.

I often pilot SUmmoners Gargoyles and Mist Lynxs they may not be top tier but I have a hard time calling them bad as other people do. Certainly more challenging to do well in but I rather enjoy them and do well

I love my gargles and EXE, but I don't consider ANY clan mechs 'bad.' Even the summoner is as good or better than most IS mechs. Bad IS mechs? I left those in mothballs after a year of no balance changes taught me that PGI will never balance this game.

Sad truths

I took my Knell out the other night. Despite being the clearly not-even-close best COM, it's still literally worse than at least half the LCTs (1E, 3M, PB). As a chassis...worst in the game.

I have all the packs and have atm about 200 mechs and I am mastering them ALL and what is strange I like them all, it depends on my flavour of the day I think, I even enjoyed my Urbans and Zeus. I really liked my Awesomes as well, am I strange?

Are the SHC-A, WVR-6R, HBK-4H and EXE-D bad? Because I do very well in them, but I could not for the life of me make the dragon-1n work so I made the 1N mini build in my WVR-6R and did better then I ever could in the 1N, I guess thats because it doesn't have a monster sized fathead that gets hit even from behind.

Kinatro and I almost never ever see another. All the other mechs mentioned I see much more often.

I have been on a CBill grind so I havent used the Kinatro's much. SCR or HBR to grind away in.

These days i pilot the phoenix locust exclusively.

When i pilot anything (in this game) at all, that is. I am kind of done with PGIs way of "balancing" and rating "player skill" for the time being. Pretty much only a forum warrior now.

I do for sure.

I use Mechs that I like because of their design. Then I upgrade them a bit, but still try to keep them faithful to their original design (keep shoulder rocket launchers for example).

I haven't played MWO in a long while and only recently tried a few games. Aparantly I'm tier 4. But that is great actually. Saw quite a few people with rather non meta Mechs. I really doubt I want to leave tier 4 anytime soon. Tier 5 must be haven! :-)

On the fence:
Summoner - I want to like it, but man, it doesn't make it easy. Maybe some day I'll find a way to make it work.

Sometimes, it's not about finding a hat that fits, but letting your head come to fit the hat.

I stopped trying to "make it work" basicly, and ever since it's been so much more enjoyable and succesful.

You mean "anything that's not stupidly fast and over gunned for a game that's supposed to be about slow tactical mech combat"?

Yes, all the time.
