I've been talking a little bit with Tina about customization options. She obviously likes the idea of customization but it's not her department. With her help, I bothered Dennis de Koning about customization and this is what he had to say.


The customization of hangars is something that I've thought of and have put on the table.
We're in the process of recreating the hangar to be 360' view-able, but as a 'when-there's-time-to-work-on-it' kind of project which means no hard due date. The next step could lead to them being customize-able, at least as much as posting faction banners. It's not carved in stone (yet), but I see it as a stretch goal.
As for customizing HUD; that's a different story. Although it's possible; unless you're thinking beyond just colour shifting, it's quite a bit of work on the engineering side. Believe it or not, the HUD is a very complex and expensive system.
Not saying it won't happen; am saying it won't happen soon. We have discussed it though and have done some R&D.

I would have spoken with him about custom geo but I already knew what he had told Alistair Winter so I only asked him about custom hangers & HUD.

Thanks for sharing. 360 hangar sounds interesting... but it's very vague as to what they means exactly, and to what end would they utilize it.
I'd say that Custom Geometry should be way higher on this list than anything that has to do with the hangar.
The hangar right now is just a backdrop.. it'd be much nicer to swap in backdrops of different maps so we can check how our camo ACTUALLY looks in the map.
I'm not sold at all on the feasibility, or even the usefulness, of a 360degree and customizable hangar.

I think most people would be just fine with colour shifting HUD. But also even just moving certain components around and enabling/disabling some things would be nice.

Yes, yes, I know, immersion is hardly a priority in MWO. But the Tutorial was pretty cool. Russ constantly mentioning Coop and AI, I mean... I can hope.

Theres many post of people elaborating how a hangar could be. I envisioned one with the mech on an elevator pad. You dont see hundreds of mech at once, you call down the one you want. We could have mech on walls on harness like in the trailer vid, they could be our cw deck or our old 4 fav mech etc etc. Tons of way a hangar could be done.

I dont think people would throw a fit if they announce a module to be sold, this is one thing id be interested at preordering/funding.

This is definitely something id like to hear about before "next months we plan on testing..."

Yeah... Was discussing this in an earlier thread and how would one go about wondering a hangar that's housing 160 mechs. We'd need teleporters, buggies, elevators.
Where is the spawn point?
How do you get from your light mechs to your assaults?
At which point do we sacrifice "immersion" for convenience?
How much immersion can be sacrificed before the interactive hanger (meant for some kind of immersion i suppose) is left meaningless.
What differences does the physical hangar have over the current UI, and are those differences beneficial or crucial to the game?

And there's more to on top of that.
I don't think that having a huge hangar that has all mechs is worth the time. It's just another feature that people are going to complain about. Another feature that they have to support and refine on top of the rest of the game.

Selling custom geo should be a priority over a rotating hangar.

Yeah that's fine - I was bringing it up because he was talking about adding customization. The same type that uses modeling and art, so if they were to do one or the other, I'd prefer the custom geo.

Not surprised the HUD is too complex to allow mods, it has a lot of moving parts to make it all function.

Even custom geo is probably going to take many months. I wouldn't be surprised if it has to wait until next fall. The hangar ( or hanger, if you prefer) would probably take until 2017 from the sound of Dennis' reply. It's so far into the future, I don't even know if I'm playing at that point. It's possible that even the Star Citizen FPS module is done by then.

Yeah I was thinking something similar. I made a poll asking what the priority level of customization should be. Perhaps it'd encourage them to put more effort into it.

The only really important thing for me would be the customizable color change of HUD.

I don't know if I am alone in this, but often I can barely read light-green HUD numbers on the background of light green or ochre terrain, or see light blue reticle on the background of light blue landscape.

Such customization would make me much more happier than some Mechbay trinkets.
