In solo games Assault Mechs get grouped with other Assaults and Heavies for their lance. How are you getting left behind by mechs that run at the same speed or only ~15 kph faster than you? It doesn't happen to 90% of other Dire pilots I see on my teams.
And with regards to your friend, if you're only running in a group with him he doesn't have to pick a light or medium, he still has a full range of heavies to assist you with. If your friend would leave your Dire behind in a heavy it's time to find some new friendly pilots.
This is generally one of the major differences between pugs and actual units/co-ops, using both situational awareness and working together as a team/unit. If your friend hightails it out of there, he is an acquaintance, not a friend nor team mate unless the following applies, then the question is, what sort of friend are you?
As to being left behind, the question is what are you doing? Are you actually ready to go at the beginning or are you doing other things before alt-tabbing back into the game? If you are communicating then they should work with you but if you are more of an silent AFK, how long should they wait for you?
