This game has 2 types of players.
Type A : Founders and Fans of BattleTech / MechWarrior.
Type B : Everyone else.

A : Let’s keep this a BattleTech / MechWarrior game with all the trimmings and avoid the FPS trap.
B : this is an FPS, I don’t care about lore, just give me action in a big robot.

A : I want more immersion and a slower TTK.
B : The TTK is to slow, I want more explosions and les thought.

. . . we really have a problem here.
We are a house divided. It is hard for a type B person to imagine what the heck type A people are thinking because they never played a MW game before and it is hard for a type A person to know what a type B person is thinking because they wanted a MW game from day one.

Sorry, I’m not sure where to go from here as I’m at work but the dev’s have a tight rope to walk and if they let it get to loose someone may end up hanging from it.

btw, I have played every PC MW game since MW1

Nope, there's only people that enjoy playing the game, and those that don't.

Those that do will have fun no matter how terrible it gets till it dies.

Those that don't will cry about everything till it dies.

The type Bs also are more likely to have never played a Strategy game in their lives.

As such they have never felt the joy of seeing missles and lasers fly from a 2d model to a 2d model on a grid in 16bit color and waiting for the results reported in the battle log for the turn.

Nor have they done the same thing in their Imagination on an actual Board using cardboard cut outs. They so lack imagination they cannot in their tiny brains come up with solutions to SIMPLE problems like Don't cap the base in assault until you have enough damage points. To still win by cap AND reap rewards.

The Type As have trouble imagining being that dumb and unimaginative.

Madcap72 is a classic type B.
He plays many games of which this is just another.
He oversimplifies because he does not care and he can not imagine the way I think because he has not played the other games.

who was here first?
OMG
This game was started by MW fans and founders.

Hence my Tag and rhetorical question :>

Hell I rememebr leaving Crescent Hawk's Inception on all night just to run up my C-Bills in the Comstar. Invest 100 Cbills wake up the next morning and it would be over 10 million.

LOL

I enjoy the game for what it is, instead of enjoying it for giving me the ability to hate on what it's not.

You can try to lump me in with the OP's false dichotomy if you wish, you'd be dead wrong of course. I've been playing and enjoying the MW franchise since it was new. This isn't "just another game" for me, it's a game I've waited decades for and thought the brand died with MS.

But enjoy the false dichotomy you ascribe to in order to reconcile your feelings. ;)

The other common breakdown it seems are people that think only THEY are true believers in MW/ BT and NO ONE ELSE can possibly know as much as they do, or like the game as much as they do and anyone that disagrees with them is WRONG, and clearly not on their level.

;)

Not so sure it is a false dichotomy. Seems pretty spot on to me. It seems to me that this strive for balance and uniformity can only lead to MWO being just another FPS, and based on a lot of the comments on these forums that is indeed what a lot of the players want.

I am of the type A.

Screw balance. I want unique mechs, with unique play. I want OP clans to struggle against. I want Mechwarrior, not Unreal Tournament.

Weird, I play lots of other games and don't care much about Battletech lore, am not a Founder and still think the game should shift more towards simulation with lower TTK.

There was an arcade where I live called the Airlock that bought some of the old firepods and ran them. Place was pretty neat.

Hmm. I am a founder and played battle tech and strategy games before and I would mostly choose B. You know, the fun type?

I congratulate you them Madcap72 on you maturity and your ability to separate your previous experiences with MW games and this one.
obviously I’m not as good at it.
I do enjoy the game though, I’ve spent more money on it than I care to admit.
It’s a nagging thought of its potential I have that I am talking of here and how people who have never played a MW game before would not understand me.

How long is average TTK in this game for a 1v1? 30 seconds? 1 minute? TTK in this game isn't that bad at all, people just think they should be able to stand in the open and tank an enemy firing line.

I enjoyed prior MW games and generally hate FPS game.

Just want a game that is stompy robot sim and not acade robot fps.

TTK is too low.

There is also very little if anything to actually "do" in the game other than shoot other mechs. - Lore/Prior games would actually be a good place to dive into here.

I also want a reason to spend money on this game again. 3 years is a long time for a company to not actually develop a game given all the money us whales have injected into it.

See, that's my thing, I'm GREEDY for Mechwarrior. It's my jam.

But take stock of what it is and the game blurs a lot of lines.

It's a vehicle simulator played from a first person perspective in humanoid piloted robots shooting each other.

People don't like to admit it, but it's more of a FPS, then most vehicle simulators. Playing online back in the day one of the only things that set it apart from Quake was better graphics, and that you had to torso twist to circle strafe, while you had to side step in quake to circle strafe. Other than little stuff like that you could have traded skins and never telled the games apart.

As to potential, the strength of MW games for potential was what they did to fit the games into the BT universe via lore in the single player modes. But NONE of that ever was included in the online gameplay. At least MWO while weak, tries to throw in some fluff here and there. Is it great? No. Is it more than the online MW components got? Yes.

The thing that profoundly annoys me, is that we had NOTHING in the way of a legit MW game forever (MWLL doesn't count, it was a hacked together total mod) and MWO comes along and all you ever hear is negativity to the point people actively wish the game goes **** up.

If that happens, I lose my ability to smash face and rake in c-bills online. I don't want that to happen.

Fortunately, since the forum here isn't actually representative of the whole playerbase, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

"A BattleTech Game." This invalidates Type B. Type B's game is Hawken or any number of FPS PC or Console games.
