There's a video with a flamer mech shutting down a catapult on IGN.

But in snowstorms...not so much since the target quickly cools down again. Might as well use lasers since they heat up the area they hit too.

NO ONE expects the flamer-boat Atlas.

OP I would think that the necessary proximity of a flammer would also put your own bacon in the fire (so to speak), so you'd better hope your buddy is a decent shot.

Yes they have already explained and shown that as a Mech gets hotter he indeed light up brighter on "thermal". Flamers increase enemy heat so logic would surely imply that it will light them up brighter for thermal. The logic here is that cooler Mechs will blend into the environment while hotter Mechs will stand out clear as day and be much easier to shoot at. It's a very cool realistic feature.

That is true but when a support mech with ER PPC's want to fire at long range with short sight it helps to have something colored to shot for.
I remember that that there was a Catapult firing on a mech standing still in the Frozen City video. There was a Commando beside that Catapult.
When they switched to thermal view the Commando became invisible even though he was clearly visible in normal vision mode since he was running cold.
That means that even if you received targeting info you still wouldn't see the exact shape of the mech without it being heated a bit and thus aiming would be more difficult since you wouldn't know which way the target was facing.

^ This. Simply knowing where the enemy is doesn't mean you're going to hit him with with your lasers or autocannons. Having the enemy GLOW BRIGHT RED in a dark BLUE environment will help SIGNIFICANTLY. Haven't you ever played AvP2 and used a Predator vision mode? It makes an extreme visual and aiming difference.

So I wonder; will there be extra XP for shutting an enemy down with a flamer, or heat painting a target for teammates weapons to destroy?

Off course it would requiere a lot of practice between a lance but it couold be an edge.
In a volcano/desert enviroment a light mech could overheat a heavy not only giving extra vision but shutting it down. If my experience in MW tells me somethings is that a lot of people will try to put as many PPC/lasers as posible thinking in alpha strikers and forgeting of the heat =P

I will however be running a Jenner with 4 flamers, a narc beacon and a buttload of heat sinks.
Because cockpit shots are a lot easier when your enemy is shut down.
