I will support any company that will allow my TT lances to exist, even if it is only digital.

This should be more than sufficient to keep the devs fed and ensure a fully functional game on release.
Based on the projected release date the mentioned funds should be sufficient.
However in terms of running a company the funds are not all the much once you factor in salary, benefits, medical, office space, utilities, IT, etc.

When you're trying to pitch a sell, a little hands on never hurts, Unless of course you spent so much of your budget on advertising you had little left for game development, like some large and well known game publishers do.

TLDR:
Company Founders > "Founders" > Pre-Order > Post-Release Buyers in terms of risk/reward ratio.

That's all it is. I know several folks that won't pre-order for the same reasons as the OP. I know some that will ore-order but won't cough up for the CE. *shrug* It's all personal preference and there's no harm/shame in wanting to see a game before you spend hard earned, potentially very tight funds on it.

I played Battletech in grade school and LOVED it, now, nobody plays the table game so this is my one last hope. I'd be happy to be a founder but I have to at least try the game.
I would love to play the game too!
The decision to purchase any founder package is definitely a choice that comes down to personal values. There is nothing wrong with being careful with your wallet, and I have to respect that as a positive trait for a fellow consumer.
Unfortunately, the only way that someone could play the game first would be to get lucky enough to be selected into joining the beta or if they decide to extend the founders promotion till the first few weeks of launch. Since game will be going with a free to play model players will be able to play before making any purchase... so your in luck there!
The big question is, when will the founder promotion expire?
Edit: PS. It must be such good motivation by having a large amount of careful consumers who are just waiting to drop down Cash on this game once they see if it meets their expectations or not. Just like a big pot of gold waiting for the Devs if it's a job well done!

You know, any comparison to WoT just make me edge away slowly from the "Buy" button (and frankly what I've seen/heard, there are indeed a lot of comparisons to make). Not that the concept of WoT is bad, I played a lot of World of Tanks since I'm a WW2 tank afficionado. But given the game was quite limited, it was mostly based on a wide variety of promises. Most of which never materialized or came a year late, and so forth. WG is a poor joke of a company. I have no experience with Piranha, but one can only hope they're not a train wreck - from the player point of view - like WG is.
