If everyone but founders have only 1 mech they can start with and it is a light I see my kill count going pretty high.

I think a medium would be more appropriate as a starting mech, because light mechs are not that easy. Mistakes are not forgiven and you need practice to control your movement.
A medium mech is easier to control for new players and has a wider variety of weapons to play with. Makes the decision easier for the new player if he wants to stay medium, go light because of the faster speed or try something heavier.

I think this would be the fairest.
You can pick an assault from the start that way, but won't have much money left. Pick a light and you can buy 2-3 mechs right away. Especially at the beginning this could be a nice incentive to avoid everybody picking an Atlas. Especially considering the Atlas is going to be the most expensive, if it's simply pick your mech a lot will go for the Atlas, since grinding 3mil c-bills for your Jenner later is a lot easier than picking a Jenner and then grinding 10mil for an Atlas (if we assume that it's not that hard to make a profit in the Atlas).
Not to mention it would prevent stuff like; Pick Atlas, sell Atlas at half price (so around 5mil), buy Jenner for 3 mil, have 2mil left and have a major advantage over the person who directly picked a Jenner.

You will pick your first mech for free...
Here a small calculation, C-Bill values absolutely fictious:
For every match you start, you get, lets say... 200.000 C-Bills...
To repair a totaled mech, you have to pay 200.000 C-Bills...
That means, if you survive a match in good shape (only 50.000 repair cost), you gained 150.000 C-Bills.
Every action, like spotting, killing or damaging an enemy mech gives you additional C-Bills.
So, nobody can get in a minus, but has to do something to get C-Bills.
As said before... it is a wild assumption... but it´s like I would handle that...

It's been explicitly stated that yes, you do indeed get a starter on top of your founders mech(s). Once again, I have no source... still hunting.

No. Assuming anything at this point would be incorrect.
Unless Redshift2k5 can produce a link to the twitter chat log, we don't have any confirmed information on how starter mechs will work.

A: A very big concern for us was that Lighter 'Mechs would perform poorly against larger ones, and what we've done is make it so that each tier is equal to every other tier of 'Mechs - in this case, Light 'Mechs such as the Jenner pose a large risk to Atlas', and Hunchbacks are just as deadly as Catapults. You'll never run into a situation where you 'cannot damage' an opponent (other than losing all your weapons of course.) [GARTH]

i couldn't find a specific mention of the 4 starter mechs, but remember one in regards to the founder mechs. Again, may not carry over. They probably will just give us money and buy what you want.

Q: How will the player’s initial ‘mech(s) be selected?
A: Players will get 1 free mech to start. They can chose from 4 1 in each class – light, med, heavy, assault. [BRYAN]
A: You will be able to choose from a selection based on the role you want to play. [RUSS]
They have said elsewhere they have lots of reasons why they want new players able to start in any class- This is not about weight class superiority, all size classes have their advantages. The bigger mechs are a bit more forgiving for new pilots, and of course then we avoid forcing new players into light mechs who may not be happy with light mechs.
]Imagine if you were forced to start in a light, then you would be forced into a scout role even fi you don't want to scout, and you would feel underpowered and undervalued when everyone else is in bigger, meaner mech.
Happy new players = more longterm players
