why wouldnt you fight on the mountain?

1) clear sight lines to most of the map
2) enemy team has to walk UPHILL to get to you, and mechs slowdown going uphill

so no you dont have to fight on the mountain. but why wouldnt you when you gain every advantage from doing so?

Line of sight means nothing if they are out of range. Also on conquest and assault you can drag em off the hill by capping. If you and your team don't want to fight on the hill make em come down. People that think Alpine has to be fought on that hill, are like people who think Terra Therma has to be fought in the freaking lava doughnut.

If being up on that mountain is such a tactically superior position, I would be a complete moron to attack you there.
No, if the enemy team is already up there, much better to pull back to a position of _my_ choosing.
Now you have two options.
1. Stay on your mountain and end the game in a 0:0 draw or
2. Come down and fight me on ground of _my_ choosing.

Alpine should stay.
I have nothing specific against Alpine. It's pretty fun in Assault and Conquest, and can be epic (or terrible) in Skirmish.
It's not the best map ever, but i don't see any reason why not to keep it as it is and rework it a bit later on.

Besides, the ridge behind the mountain is even taller and harder to attack than the mountain itself. Get some 'Mechs up there with long range and the mountain campers are gonna have a bad time.

Alpine can be voted down. There's no reason to remove it- and as noted, it's only even a concern in Skirmish mode with the endless mountain fights.

If MWO players would go "Oh, the enemy is set up in a killing ground- let's not mess with that and force the fight on ground of our own (if less advantageous than the enemy) choosing", a lot of fights would go differently. Terra Therma's the same way, with a strong central terrain feature that draws PUGs like moths to the flame even when someone else is in there.

i dont like seeing "classic maps" permanently removed from the game. perhaps pulled from the map rotation but not removed entirely (playable with custom matches). take that a step further and support 3rd party maps. the community could port over all the totally awesome MWLL maps for example, and who knows maps that pass muster could be added to the offitial rotation.

The only thing they need to do to "Fix" it is make the mountain in the middle impassable and move the drop zones a little...it's a 15 minute fix for a programmer and would completely change the way that map is fought/played...

I tweeted this to Russ and Paul both.

As did I. Finally got Twitter for that reason lol.
I just don't want to see maps removed since we have so few already. Even if the new map is a 'replacement' it won't be the same. Variety is variety. I'd rather see Alpine fixed
They wouldn't even have to do a full overhaul. Just fix the drop zones. Anything is better than scrapping a functional map

This game actually has plenty of maps when compared to other instanced PvP games. The thing is, in such games, WoT being a very good example, they do make decisions to retire maps when they find balance is at stake and user experience low. It does not matter how few or many the maps are, if its a bad map, it has to go. As a developer, you have the responsibility as an architect, and bad architecture simply has to go.

Alpine is a fun map. There are good ways to fight both up hill and down hill, regardless of where your assaults spawned.

As long as your team has some longer range mechs you will be fine. If ALL of you have only SRMs then you might be SOL, but that rarely happens.

Most important determinant of victory is still the quality of your team. This is most obvious when you charge the volcano in Terra Therma, but it also shows on Alpine.

The following are videos I recorded a month back in a Gauss Jager. You don't have to be in a Gauss Jager to play Alpine. It helps, obviously, but it's not essential. The tactics are equally valid in other long to medium range builds. The main thing is that you have to know how to find advantageous firing positions.

Fighting uphill:

Alternate strategy if you spawn on the hill side but your assaults are waaaaaaay out in no man's land:

I dont get it! Another nerf for those who like to snipe. Alpine is actually the only map i really like. Why dont u just work on maps of MW4 and put them into MWO?? Such as frostbite, dustbowl, etc. Those are perfect!

Alpine is the only map where u can tactically manoeuvre (if 12 play together).
ALL OTHER MAPS ARE TO SMALL TO DO THAT!!!

I cant believe that you keep maps like viridian bog, terra therma, forrest colony (still sux) as they are.
And dont forget on top of the sh!tlist: Frozen city, Frozen city night

It's a poor map that encourages camping on the hill of death (on skirmish and especially on assault). Preferably though they would keep Alpine and flatten out that hill with easier access from all sides.

Meanwhile in reality: one of the impatient ADHD kiddies runs up to the slope, eats 3-4 alphas, dies and you need to storm the hill Posted Image Posted Image

But yeah, I like the map. The start positions should be changed to north and south of the mountain so that both team can choose from which way to ascend.
