Admittedly, Class III JJs are a little weak for that. Charging the Gauss mid-air on the Hunch is no problem at all with Class IVs, but with 4JJs on the Timby, it's a touch harder. Still perfectly capable, with small hills and such, but hard enough to mention VS the Med poptarts.

Why not all of us just vote for the NOVA CAT and be done with it

I've constantly been stymied in my builds. Timberwolf is ideal for laser vomit, but if you love the holy dakka, its junk. Just not enough tonnage.

Same reason as why I ran 255's on my Jagermechs.

I don't like speed very much.

I love big ******* guns.

Our assault options are, however, too slow, too fast, or too hardpoints limited for what I want.

The night gyr is the perfect mix for me.

well, it does have some missile and at least 3 ballistic hardpoints.

hmm? Not always. Not for me at least. Nova Cat means a 70 tonner that's optimal for me, whereas the Night Gyr is 75. This matters for drop deck construction: we don't have a (valid) 70 ton option.

first, you did not answer my questions pointing exactly towards what you missed in your statement.

but let me give you more reasons:
Night Gyr has both Endo and Ferro so that means less crits to work with, specially you have something like 38 tons of pod space (it only has minimal 5 crits per torso to work with)
One of its energy hardpoints is in the head. it has 4 FIXED JJs (hover jets).

Nova Cat on the other hand, does not have fixed JJs, have more crits to work with and that goes nicely with 37 tons of pod space. it has a wide range of hardpoints (from 3x ballistic arms to 3x missile arms to 3x energy arms and energy torsos)


Night Gyr is a pretty good mech... but i would not say that nova cat is a "downgraded" version... not at all.
besides... Nova cat will provide a strong 70ton contender that we are missing on the clan side.


now tell me again... how is nova cat an "energy only boat" when i can run 6xASRM6 on it with backup lasers?... or 3x UAC5s with backup lasers?

... And the Nova Cat arms are significantly higher, at least according to Sarna artwork. Honestly, even excluding tonnage, I'd prefer the Nova Cat. More room for big guns AND the tonnage to use them.

You must not actually play CW... IS assaults are a staple. A lot of us are running 2 85 ton assaults and 2 blackjacks, largely on the principle that against most teams you can just assault smash them and not even use the BJs. Battlemasters, Stalkers and to a lesser extent Banshees are all over CW.

Im the reverse. Imo the Cat is better (pretty damn high mounted arms, and ability to do fully articulated triple UAC5 double LPL definitely does it for me), and it would be nice to have another good even tonnage mech. My OCD goes crazy if my CW dropdeck is even 5 tons underweight.

This has been my experience as well.

IS Wave 1: Almost all assaults, with the odd Marauder for spice
IS Wave 2: Mostly assaults, a couple more Marauders and maybe a TDR or two.
IS Wave 3: Holy sweet mother of Blackjacks. Damn, am I ever glad to see a Thud in there too.
IS Wave 4: A nice mix of yet more Blackjacks, and a surprising number of locusts.

But I'd say the majority of people are running two assaults, or an assault and two heavies. Clan side, aside from newbies packing DWF champs, very, very few assaults get used. Some Executioners, and the odd Warhawk, but VERY rare.

Yes, bow to the triple UAC10 dakka (on a Night Gyr preferably so we can do duall gauss as well.)

I wouldn't be that disappointed with the Nova Cat, but it only has 2 torso E weapons, everything else is in the arms so that will be spread pretty wide. Also, cannot do dual gauss :/

I get the 5 tons under drop thing but the Viper/Fire moth could fix that for me.

See, this is the thing. Try running two UAC10's on a Timberwolf. You can, but only barely, and with just minimal other weapons. It's basically got the same pod space as my Hunchback IIC.

But drop down 11 tons? Now I can run two UAC10's and have, after ammo, some 14 tons to play with. That's way, way more awesome. So many more interesting build options.

This is why I don't like the Timberwolf very much. Yes, it's perfect for Laser Vomit. A big engine just allows you to cram in more DHS, after all, and lasers don't require much tonnage. But as soon as you want to start having builds that aren't stupidly boring, those tonnage limits really get irritating.

And thus, why we really need to get some slower mechs for Clans, with more pod space. Almost all our current mechs are faster ones with limited pod space, which is great if laser vomit every day is your bag, or if you just like going fast. But because of locked engines, the only options for those who want to bring Moar Gunz is IIC mechs - and those we have right now are fun, and while not bad, they're not exactly modeled after the best IS chassis and thus they all feature... Unfortunate geometry.
