Good Game means that the game was good not that the game was challenging or that it was close. Simply that it was a good game i.e. it was enjoyable for the person stating good game. there is nothing more to that statement.
The game may be good and close even if it is a stomp because this is coming from an individual and therefore could well be referring to his experience of the game. He or she may have had to fight hard against the enemy and it may have been very close for them. In MWo this might mean that their mech was down to something like 20% or something like that.
I for one have had many an exciting match where I have duelled with an enemy for a long time only to look up and note that the game appears to be a stomp. This is still a good game for me, because it was enjoyable, and it was close because my skill was pitted equally against my opponent that could've ended easily in my defeat.
This is not to mention that the death score does not reflect how close a match actually was.
In order for Good Game to be offensive you have to imply a level of condescension or sarcasm into the phrase. This is easily detected in face to face verbal communication but cannot be implied by text communication as the language has no means of communicating the emotion or intention connected to the words. therefore the offence taken is at a perceived slight that may never have happened. The offence you take is therefore stems from your perception that you did not have a good game and therefore the person must be taking the mick.
So on examination we can conclude that even in what appears to be a easy victory the game may indeed have been good from the person stating that. Further any implied offence is actually a reflection on the receivers perception not the senders intention.

Are your egos so fragile that some of you are salty about what is often short hand for "thanks for the match?" Seriously, do modern Westerners always immediately assume malice when there is none?

If it was a 0/1/2:12 it feel it a bit questionable, but a 6:12 or better? Sure.
Hell, on 8+:12, I usually type a GG myself even though I have been on the losing team.
I´d do that too, but the other team can´t hear that (or does that change at the game´s end?)
I do that for my own team not the enemy. I mean if they got rocked hard it feels like I'm just being a ****.
I will compliment any pilots on their team who I had a lot of trouble with though.

So in your opinion referring to what the OP said - You lose 12 - 1 in a steam roll and the opposing team has players that say, "GG Close."........ And that means "thanks for the match."
Naw, I'm not fragile. Matter a fact I would care less. A lot of us commenting aren't commenting because we have "fragile" egos. It's simply discussing what the meaning was. A discussion can't be had?

I actually recently turned it on and have been quite surprised/impressed with how civil everyone is.

GG != ggclose
OP is complaining about the regular GG that damned near everybody says and is inferring negative connotation where there likely is none.

Apologies, you're right. With everyone talking about the difference between "GG" and "GG Close" somewhere along the way I was thinking the OP mentioned it was GG Close that was stated.

Well, if comes from someone that says it every game win or lose, they're actually being a good sport. But if they only say it when the game is a wash in their favor, then yeah, they're being ******.
Hard to say for sure if you've only done one match against them, though, if all they said the whole time was gg at the end, but I can see why it might seem like they're just trolling.

I blame the carebear education systems that teach you it's the taking part that counts.

Its pretty much just habbit for me at this point at a games conclusion. I've even said it when on the stompped team. But I dont get as upset about a loss as others.
"GG clothes", or "EZEZ " is phenomenaly doooshy... Like gives me the doosh chillz dooshy. Like, I wish death on you and your family dooshy. Like... If I found you in a car wreck, and it was burning, I would leave you in it, to burn... dooshy... Which is, ironicaly dooshy of me.

If they say "GG, close" then they are just D-bags and you should feel comforted in the knowledge that you only have to deal with them in a very limited fashion while they have to live with themselves 24/7.

You are far better off ignoring it when a lopsided matches happen.
The only time it means anything is if you actually mean it and given that it is used at will for anything and everything, it's lost its true meaning.
Thus, you are better off reading/saying little to nothing if you don't care. Saying otherwise publicly will invite more trouble than it is worth.

I have no idea if it is school or what, but I'm still pretty young and it may be that I was privately schooled. But after T-Ball, if I got a trophy it's because I did something to earn it. And it shows because I did a lot of stuff and have only a handful of trophies, badges, or ribbons to show for all the effort.
Everything extracurricular I did was a stiff competition except Boy Scouts. And even there, you didn't get participation trophies or badges. You had to successfully do something to get them.
