I don't think the 'pistol' is quite as much as a pistol as what the image makes it look like, but detachable weapons make a lot of sense for a 'mech if you think about it. The BattleMaster was supposed to be able to drop its PPC.

Most likely a nod to the Veritech/Valkyrie fighters the Phoenix Hawk was based on. Their "feet" were their thruster nozzles folded open:
Mech designs by Shoji Kawamori has a tendency to use this leg and feet design.

The design needs to be consistent with the other mechs in MWO to create a common design theme or signature. So no surprise with the Enforcer like head.

Well, the head doesn't look THAT different from the TRO artwork. Still rounded, with a visor like cockpit window and antennae on the sides.

So, you already find Wolverine, Griffin and Battlemaster hilarious?
Because they have basically the same design of arm-mounted weapon.

None of them have such distinctive pistols in mwo. I don't know why I even bother telling you that.

The whole hand-held part is basically the same on all of those mechs.
The only difference is that Phoenix Hawk's is top-mounted as opposed to side mounted, which makes it actually better, by the notion of it being a higher mount.
But whatever, to each his own. I for one, really like the way it looks (and wish my Wolverine had his AC this way too)
