I'm not certain if this belongs here or in the Tabletop area. Admins, please feel free to shift this if desired.

A little preamble: I design paper models, mostly in the mid-very small sizes. Some of these are commercial (for sale), although most are not. It is mostly a hobby for me (one of many). I am also a bit OCD with regards to scale. I hate to see models placed next to each other when they are not relative to one another. I've been working on 1:1000 scale buildings and such for Battletech (the horizontal scale for the hexes) for the last few weeks, but I've wanted to see if I could make 'true' scale Mechs as well. I build a test model of a Catapult and found that 1:1000 was about the limit, but was completely possible in paper.

Inspired by the success of my test I wanted to make more, but there are very few good sources for multi-angle pictures of Battlemechs. I tried my hand at a few, and I even have some 'armour' in that scale I am quite happy with. However, I was not satisfied with the results of the mechs themselves. I was reinspired though, after playing the open-source release of Mechcommander 2. In fact I was quite excited to see that the models were in great condition for conversion to small scale paper figurines. What is better is that all of the mechs are scaled appropriately to themselves, saving me the trouble of trying to determine how big each really were.

There are 39 mechs in the game and I have managed to extract all of them, although without textures maps intact. I'm not overly concerned as the original textures were quite low resolution and I would have needed to make new textures anyway. The meshes are simple enough that remapping is quite easy. I suspect quite a few will need correcting, I've already redesigned the Catapult torso (I will be texturing a new one, rather than the original test build).

All of the mechs can be seen below. The list is in alphabetical order, so does not map to the pictures in sequence.

Spoiler

Mechs:
Anubis
Atlas
Bushwacker
Catapult
Cougar
Cyclops
Enfield
Flea
Highlander
Hollander
Hunchback
JagerMech
Lao Hu
Men Shen
Raven
Ryoken
Sha Yu
Shootist
Starslayer
Uller
Urbanmech
Werewolf
Wolfhound
Zeus
Clan: Blood Asp
Clan: Mad Dog (Vulture)
Clan: Shadow Cat
Clan: Summoner (Thor)
Clan: Timber Wolf (Mad Cat)

A note on 'Scale'. I've compared a scale Union Dropship I am working on (which has actual measurements, and yes will be paper as well) to a comparative scaling chart of mechs/vehicles. Using this I determined a reasonable range for Assault class Mechs to fall into. The scale itself uses a Banshee as the 'Assault' mech scale reference. I reasoned that the Atlas likely stands a little taller than it, so rescaled all the mechs to reflect this. This gives a height range of 8-18 meters tall for the mechs, from the smallest, the UrbanMech, to the tallest, the Atlas. Also, I have used a base 32 mm hex as a 30 m horizontal scale rounding it to an even 1000. If printed as is, it actually comes out to 1:938. To get true 1:1000 scale mechs the .pdo models scale will need to be modified to 30 (instead of 36).

Even better, the models and textures will be designed so that those people who are not obsessive about scale (like I am) can resize them and printed them at 'miniature' scale (1:280 or so). The meshes should be quite easy to construct at that size.

Currently the Atlas and the UrbanMech are textured. Next will be the Catapult, shown below compared to the original MechCommander 2 model (the model I am going with is on the left).

Spoiler

I just completed the Beta build of the Atlas, which was very successful. The CDN penny in the second picture, for reference, is 19 mm (3/4") in diameter. The hex 'hills' are 32mm (1.25"). I will be releasing the Atlas as a package (with the .pdo file and a texture file) shortly. If it is a small enough file I will post it on both Zealot.com and Papermodelers.com. If not, I'll be posting it on my site.

Spoiler

Enjoy,
Tirick

Good on ya', those would be great for people wanting to get into TT but didn't want to spend a fortune on miniatures.

Love the Vulture by the way

Thank you all for your comments. The Vulture is on the short-list of mechs to be textured, maybe after the Cat. It is probably my favorite Clan mech, even more so that the Mad Cat.

Maybe you already know it but vlmarshall at mechwarrior.org worked on MC2 paper models but they were at 1/60 scale and kept the original textures.

Your textures are far better. Being a builder art small scale I'm really impressed by the tiny size of your 'Mechs.
Can't wait toi see the other models

I was not actually aware there was someone else working with the MC2 models, no. I would not want to use these models for 1:60 myself, they are a tad too blocky for my preference. There is a set I know from the MW4 game that are great for the 1:50-1:60 scale range though. I thought about building one or two, but time/space thus far has prohibited me.

Well, I've finished the Catapult textures. I am very happy with the results, I think I really captured the shape of the front/torso well.

I'm heading overseas on vacation in a few days so I doubt I'll have time to unfold / build a prototype before then. However, when I get back I plan to build both this and the UrbanMech, as well as the main elements of the 1:1000 train set.

Enjoy,
Tirick

Check out my paper Catapult model!

I finished a Papakura Catapult today while I'm waiting for MWO release. My daughter helped me complete it. Yep, I'm I have sad pending status too. Anyone else doing Papakura mechs? I saw the smaller papakura game board mechs, but I didn't see that the pdo files were released yet. I like them, they look awesome!

You can see more pictures of the build here: http://sfly.com/b296pg

If you want to build one, search for mech pdo files to build or download the catapult pdo file here: http://www.gamefront...del___Scale1_40

Next, download the papakura viewer program and print out the pdo file onto card stock paper, cut, glue, etc. http://www.tamasoft....oad/viewer.html

That looks like the Cat model Blaar put together based on the MW4 models. His collection is great, he really put a lot of thought into converting the 3d mesh into good paper model parts. The Overlord he did is on my list to build, although at 1:1000 scale (it'll still be about 13 cm tall).

The Atlas is submitted for approval on both Zealot.com and Papermodelers.com, just pending approval.

Blaar made a lot of models but this one, one of the eariest papercraft based on MW4, has been made by Shiftdel, another great modeller.

If you want to use my models for your project, feel free to do so.

You can download them here:

That would be awesome, thank you. I knew another modeler had made MW4 paper models but the name had escaped me.

I am (im)patiently waiting for the file to be approved for download on papermodelers, com and zealot.com, so I have added the first file, the Atlas, to a subfolder on my site (accessible through the menu item 'Battlemechs'): http://tcfgaming.com

Please feel feel free to get them there instead. I will be uploading more files as I get the builds tested, although I am on vacation for the next week and a half, so I will not be testing any more until late July/early August. The .zip files will all include both the .pdo (Pepakura) file and a sample texture to use as a template for making your own unit insignia if desired. If you missed the note in the first post, these can be easily rescaled to a larger tabletop scale if desired. They will certainly be easier to build at a larger scale.

Enjoy,
Tirick

Thanks! Wow, those are tiny! It's really cool! I don't have the papakura designer, just the viewer, and I don't see how to resize them to game size. Could I bother you to resize it for me? Yeah, I'm too cheap to buy the designer. I'll try to make it at the current size, but wow that was way more tiny than I thought! Very good work!

If you download designer instead of viewer you can use it to rescale, you just cannot save the file without a license.

Viewer has advantages over designer in some ways as you can select an unfolded element and see an x-ray view of the model showing where it is attached. Otherwise it is more limited.
