In another thread AEGG asked if one of my contests would be around in 2061.

I said yes, but to be honest I am kinda of curious of what the community thinks on this one.

Will MWO be around in 2061?

If so,
  • How can we keep a game alive that long?
  • Has any MWO game been around that long, to date?
  • How can MWO/PGI keep the game alive for that long and into the future past that?

If not,
  • Thoughts?
  • Why not?

The current year is 2016.

So, that means we'd have to stick around for 45 additional years.

That seems virtually impossible to me, especially for a niche game like this. A lot of the MegaWhales in this game will get too old to play the game anymore, so they won't be able to supply PGI's constant need for MechPack money. Most of the Whales can't be replaced by random Steam newcomers, and thus no mo money = no mo game after such a huge span of time has passed.

Well, that, and the fact that playing the same thing for 40+ years will get boring for almost anyone.

This isn't even based on my usual cynicism or Bittervet tendencies, it just physically doesn't seem possible regardless of how good or not we think the game is.

1. By never stopping to play, but I do not see this happening.

2. This question makes no sense. No, no MWO game has been around that long, because the only MWO game is MWO, and this one is around now how long? 4 years?
If you meant a MechWarrior game, also no, BattleTech:The Crescent Hawk's Inception has been released in 1988, 28 years ago. Not only is that much shorter than from 2016 to 2061(45 years), but I honestly do not know if anyone is still playing this. But this is also not the exact MechWarrior game. The first MechWarrior game was released a year later in 1989, and I can confirm I have been playing it just a few weeks ago, so this would be 27 years. Still a long way from 45 though. So I guess the correct answer to your question is no. Fun fact, one of the earliest computer games, Pong, has been released in 1972, which would mean it has been around for 44 years, and some are probably still playing it from time to time.

3. I would guess it would include a lot of rewrites of the game to keep it going for 45 years.

4. Please no. Let someone else give a crack at it, not that MWO is completely bad, even if it was the best MW game ever, I would still like to see what others could have done with the universe. And there is really no chance to keep the exact same computer game in use for so long, at least not in serious use. I just hope MWO will get a story mode, so I can re-install it 20 years from now, and have a good time remembering the times when I was younger.

5. Look at number four.

There might be a Mechwarrior Online game in 2061.

It won't be this one.

In its current state I give it another two years. This is PGIs first attempt at a MMO. I think this has been an excellent education, but their inability to fully monetize all aspects of the game, their inability to capitalize on the Steam release, their inability to deliver as promised, the lack of depth of CW, and their speed to react to issues and deliver actual content does not bode well.

Hopefully I am wrong, I have mucho dinero invested in this game, but I think we will be lucky to be playing this in 2018.

Online games can have a longevity, but I don't see this game lasting that long. Most games certainly won't. I'll be 70 because I got into Mechwarrior as a pre-teen, but a lot of the old timers will be cyrogenically frozen by the year 2061.

EDIT: pre teen (no space) is censored... weird *******

Let's see 45 years ago was 1971. Be hard to play a mechwarrior game back than as Battletech wasn't a thing till 1984. Also be tough as the first home computer didn't release till 1977..

Yeah pretty sure 5 seconds on google would have answered this...

Also what video game is still in massive play even 10 years down the line vs 45?

It's one of those words that can get a site flagged by the software the police use to hunt down child pornography IIRC.

My estimate is that development of M.W.O will stop around first, second quarter 2018, if P.G.I make enough money to support keeping the severs going without making mech is unlikely, it could go on longer, by closing the euro and oceanic servers, we'll see.

This is the first Mech game that didn't have an off line component, so its days are numbered unlike other versions of it before, which are still played by a few people with old PC's with older operating systems.

Ah, im 94 in 2061.

For me this means im only playing LRMs at this time. Brawling would not be good for my heart. Lights are to fast, even an urbie.

I should have about 2900 mechs by then.

...and my pc should be in the basement because its not so easy to get my wheelchair up the stairs.

But over all i would be pleased to play mwo as long as it is online.

wish Microsoft would pick the series up again, their coders needed the vacation/change to something more fun.

It is possible, but unlikely. There are a fair number of games that have lasted ten to fifteen years or even longer. We haven't had personal computers long enough for a game to last 45 years though, let alone the internet.

That said, people have been playing a number of board games for 45 years or more. So a specific game still being entertaining from time to time isn't the question, it's whether it's feasible to keep it running on new hardware, and in the case of a company-hosted game like MWO, how expensive it is to keep the servers running.

Well think of how much money that some people [including myself] have put into this game. I would like it if the servers would stay up even if hey aren't producing content anymore.

I hope that if this game dies out they switch to another engine and import everything there then add some Storylines or stuffs
all package buyers should get instant access to that game
