Hmm I guess it really depends on what you focus on.

I can understand the comparison to the Cauldron Born a bit better, because at least it has the elonged round torso.
Recognition capability is based on expertise and interest. At a certain level, even a flight sim enthusiast cannot confuse F-15 and F-14. Obviously I am no MechWarrior, but with a little background in the air force and in archaeology, and thus having a little training in shape recognition in two rather different fields (Posted Image), my eyes cannot overlook the huge difference between Shadow Cat and Nightstar.

... at least when talking about the miniatures. Yes, some artwork here makes the Nightstar more boxy and perhaps creates more similarities to other Mechs. And I am sure MWO would eliminate some of the round shapes, too.
Also, I do not know how computers in the 31st century work (who would?). Perhaps the same computer that had trouble identifying the Mad Cat (switching between Marauder and Catapult) would also confuse Shadow Cat and Nightstar (though I hope not).

In the end, it matters little. Even if the Nightstar ends up like a bigger Shadow Cat, I would pilot it. :)

Agreed. To me the differences are easy to see.

No offense taken :D Just an interesting observation. I agree with a lot of the points made. I think to a degree its hard to come up with newer designs that fit within the universe. Looking back i feel like it has a lot in common with the EBJ... Anyway...

Yeah with the number of mechs it's easy to have some overlap without intending it. Still I really like yours because its a front on view, the arms are horizontal and in general it looks great and even captures it's Marauder heritage, IMO.

I have some images to add to the thread, but the forum won't let me load them. Anyone know how to do so from a Onedrive account?

i know, same with other "Drives" - so you always need a third party - really stupid creating stuff say Google Sheets and instead of linking the graph you need to "screenshot" and upload it again
just add them as hyperlinks

Nice! I really like the long barrels on the gauss rifles and the high mounted ppc. But I've gotta ask, does that middle part of the waist protrude? Haha does this pic need a warning label?

I had based it off of this picture, with a few aesthetic changes of my own, but I tried to keep to the original design:

So apparently mech "package" is canon

Then the Nightstar would be the "happiest" mech in MWO!

Some of the artwork took inspiration from the Ebj but technically it's a Marauder with it's arms horizontal to it's torso instead of going down.

There are some superficial similarities to the Cauldron Born since they are based on similar design principles, but otherwise the designs are not only unrelated (Clan LoreMasters may correct me if I am wrong), they have very different roles and would have very different roles in MWO - starting with the obvious fact that the Nightstar would finally provide the IS with a powerful assault Mech to compete with the Clan assaults in at least some more aspects than the best IS assaults can do now.

Let's be honest: currently the heavier IS assaults are seriously outperformed in the vast majority of situations. Sure, a well piloted King Crab still beats the Kodiak in close range combat (been there, done that); and the Atlas is a tank everyone wishes to have in his team. But realistically they, as well as the Banshee and the Cyclops, cannot pull as much weight as a Kodiak or a MAD IIC can.
The Nightstar could close the gap somewhat, especially in long range combat. With the LFE on the horizon, the Nightstar might close it to an even larger extent.

So there is more to it than just being a bigger Cauldron Born.

And I have not even talked about the lore, my favourite aspect of the Nightstar. (Although I am probably the only one to like the Nightstar for its lore Posted Image ).

Ya the Nightstand would make for an interesting addition that's for sure. Just wanted to say in reference to your comments on IS -Clan viability; I don't know about that, as I've seen a few Grasshoppers just rip people's face off in two alphas...

Well Grasshoppers are heavies and is a good mech but the Nightstar would be a strong assault addition that can help bolster the IS.

It is a personal thing, really. When I started with BattleTech, I was a fan of the early ComStar, its secretiveness and mysticism, and its ComGuards using cached Star League equipment in pristine condition. I was also a fan of the Marauder. And seeing the Nightstar was the bigger and meaner Star League era cousin of the Marauder, which was forgotten by everyone but ComStar, I obviously liked it.
It is one of those rare and incredibly powerful Mechs serving ComStar faithfully from the first days of the ComStar Expeditionary Force conquering Terra to the days of Tukayyid.

As time went on, I became a fan of the Lyrans too (especially as both ComStar and WoB developed in a way I disliked), and the Nightstar was right there too.

The Nightstar was some lore impact beyond that being Sandoval's Mech of choice as well as being featured prominently in the Wolf Dragoons during the CJF incursion. Fans of the FedSuns respectively the March Draconis, and fans of the Dragoons may like the Mech for those reasons too. Actually, the battle between the 2nd Robinson Rangers and their sister regiment, the 3rd Robinson Rangers, on New Avalon was quite dramatic indeed.

But the reason I like it is primarily the Star League/ComStar connection. And if the Nightstar ever comes to MWO, I will paint it white immediately. Posted Image

I wasn't talking about IS-Clan balance in general, I was focussing on the assault Mechs - and I have very little doubt that Kodiak and, to a lesser extent, the Marauder IIC reign supreme in this weight class.
The Nightstar might challenge them at least in long range combat.

A relatively new Nightstar fan has done some artwork of the Nightstar but needs help posting it here on the forums. Anyone able to help?
I tried posting it myself several times but wouldn't actually appear in the post. My artwork may be only decent compared to some artists out there, but I figured 'only decent' was perfectly fine. For me, drawing is more just a hobby I only occasionally indulge in due to time constraints, but I do enjoy it.

Nice. For me it's not just it's potential in MWO that interests me but also it's looks and now that I've put so much time into it it'd be a major bummer if it never happened. I'd still highly appreciate everyone that contributed with artwork, new variant ideas, new heroes, etc.
