Anyway, just spotted this dude in an actual game. My bad.

Lol, I'll admit that looks pretty bad, given some time people will probably get a little more serious with their paint jobs... I think we're in the 'let's do it because we can stage.'

And to the "what would stop you in the 30th century crowd", what would stop you is chain of command or not being good enough to be allowed to paint your mech.

Can't wait to see the premium decals. Sure they will be worth the 1250 MC. What is that in USD? Good lord.

If you think decals are a nice thing then your standards must be low enough to think we have acceptable faction warfare.

No i have this thing called a "sense of humor" and ain't a salty grumpy uber sour puss serious stick in the mud. Are the dekals not what we expected, yes. But there is no reason for the amount on anger on display Me think this is just a cover for some pent up anger.

Yeah... you seem to have forgot that looks was one of the last things this game had.. . What do you think alex is doing?... why PGI keeps him around if cheesy BT art are acceptable?

And for real military. Show me ones with decals over cockpit... or something that covers half of the body.

may take a bit to find stuff that covers the canopy as that is pretty new, but

are those deployment colors? Nope.

But I guess Phranken and Cobra and Plaid Paintjobs are acceptable but silly decals (which are militarily appropriate) are not?

I'm a purist but know the value of graphics on military craft. Some are clearly better than others but, as has been said, beauty has always been in the eye of the beholder. You want to let your freak flag fly and be seen piloting a mech of questionable taste? So be it. So long as you can actually pilot it well enough to help the cause, whatever works for you and yours.

If you know that other people can turn them off (which most probably will, because even if they don't are about the aesthetics, it'll be a slight bonus to system performance, not having to draw the decals), then there's no incentive to pay MC for them.

Like any customisation option, it's only value comes from other people seeing it...

Like my camo, I don't care a bit if anyone sees them, I do it for my own amusement.

Admittedly, annoying lore monkeys is a welcome side effect. :P

But in all seriousness, People want to express themselves and stand out. Just as the uniquely skinned Hero mechs do. I don't see the difference. If people want to drive their '75ton bundle of love, kisses and happy hugs" war machine onto the battle field looking like a Mardi Gras float then all the power to them! Nothing would stop them in the 30th century and nothing should stop them now.

Because in all seriousness, most people who painted the Hero Mechs kinda want to see through the cockpit. They also do not paint inside your gauss rifle or into the air vents/ heatsink vents or into the jumpjet ports.

All these running emoji mechs would never happen much in BT. The best (or worst?) we got is the atlas 1,2 ,3. which has a reasonable skull face, and the Ursus, Wolfhound, and Panther.
Posted Imageand this is the Ursus if anyones wondering.

Theme? none of these have a smiley face cockpit/ head. No problem... what about paint?... well they put them in the standard locations for a Battlemech. As in not in the weapons/vents/glass/ etc... There's a huge difference between having a Smiley face on the side of the arm holding the urbanmechs AC 20 and bellow it the decal "Kill secured" was done.
And then there's putting an oversized smiley face on the entire mechs CT running around.

I hope you can see the differences it creates.

Lips and smiley faces are also things in BT, and in military branches. I mean we literlaly have the highlander "heavy metal" which belonged to a woman who loved hot pink. A hot pink mech. What, do we say we should remove the colour for being immersion breaking? well doing so would be immersion breaking itself...

And face it, what breaks immersion, the fact these deckals are in game or t he fact people slap them in odd places to form phallic objects and new heads.

actually thinking about it... wasn't there a mercenary unit or something that they had their insignia be a smiley face with 3 arrows coming from it?... I remember seeing it on some BT figures...

this is the google image search for the words: BATTLETECH FASA ARTWORK.

and this is the google image search for the words: BATTLETECH MINIATURES.

show me where the mechs that look like rage comics or the carebears are.

stuff like this doesn't show in any of the battletech artwork released not any of the previous mechwarrior games.
no tabletop player ever painted a mech like that.
a writer of the novels can be the biggest hack in the world. i don't really care for what they come up with if it doesn't gel with the fictional universe or is not even practical.

the main or base color of a mech would be something that serves to recognize a friendly, like a uniform in war. unless it is solaris if this was 3050.

naturally since this is a game we can accept there would be solaris paint jobs mixed in. like we accept clan + IS on the same team. that doesn't matter,

but to make the decals look like rage comics or the carebears or lego is just a slap in the face.
i don't play a videogame to remind me that i am on the internet and 'there be trolls'.
i play a game with cool graphics and an interesting concept CAUSE IT'S INTERESTING!

i think the main thing that needs to happen is that it shouldn't paint over the cockpit
that's not nose art or body art, it's like a parade float or a moving billboard. it's trolling.

Many moons ago I used to paint my mechs in nice bright colors, I started getting alot more deaths and after muting the colors I found I didnt get focused down anywhere near as much.

If someone wants to bring big shiny shoot me here decals on their mech, fine by me, from personal experience, expect death.

um actually these emoji mech do and have happened in Battletech.

We have a Locust covered in dolls and a gold anodized Battlemaster in Camachos Caballeros. A Banshee with clown paint and a giant Jester Cap in the Eridani Light Horse, and much much worse in Solaris. And that's without even trying.

All lore. All "real Battletech" bro.

Relax and shoot some mechs, man.

ah but my 3-4 AC will be dialed back! That Kerensky name just screams target to me! :P

I also have one painted to look like Winnie the Pooh..... because I mean... really.. if we want to talk about absurd... how about a 100 ton, flying robot with a Teddy Bear head? If we can accept that "and be immersed"...then well, I rest my case.

This! I mean seriously... have you guys seen what they use to paint on those WWII bombers? Google it! Semi-naked women, clowns, barely clothed ladies, love hearts, cartoons, pinup girls... I'll be honest; It's mostly just chicks with hardly any clothes...

In fact if PGI do indeed actively enforce their ToS with regards to the decals, then I would safely say that this will be the most PG rated war that world has ever seen as far as paint jobs go.
