The decals are badly made. Badly interact with the mechs geometry. Badly interact with the games lightning system.

They look horrible. Thats what is the real problem for me.

Wish I had screencaps of the last match I played where a person had convincingly setup a lore correct Mauler. It was dope. I however put a giant smiley in the gut of my Jaggermech so as to seem as if it's belly were a few cards short of a full deck. And I stuck the cross of Neptune on his arm because that is a part of my personal sacred geometry (or religion). Then, feeling like I had not finished, with great brilliance, I placed an angered smiley next to his (now defunct) weapons.

I dont care if people put multi coloured {Richard Cameron} on every mech they own provided it looks like a painted warmachine and not bright textureless microsoft clipart crudely post processed over the screen.

So, to be clear, because you think these decals are wonderful, nobody else deserves to have the option to not display them even though such an option would not in any way reduce your ability to enjoy mech dongs and whatever other "immersion" the decals bring to the game... and this selfish belief is justified by claiming that an optional off switch for each player's display would magically "undo" all the effort that's been put into allowing us to put smiley faces and lips on our mechs. That is truly one of the worst lines of reasoning I've ever seen on the internet, including the drek I've read on political forums. It's madness like that which explains why PGI doesn't read these forums.

Oh my you start to be a pitifily crusader of your wishes.

First you made incorrect claims about immersion, yet we could estimate it was just your lack of understanding the BT universe.
But now that you ran out of these fake arguments because they were dismanteled your start the typical crusade war of a bad politican.
Now unlike you I can even support this with facts, because all you do now, is trying to create an opinion about me by twisting and inventing thing said that never happened.
So tell me, where did I said:

Sow here did you read that again? Thats not even close to what I said. Now you are either went into intentionally spradign lies and trying to spread bad opinion about me, in which case you are just a filthy liar per definition, or you just haven't even read what I wrote. But in the later case just hould shut up before you start looking REALLY pitiful, because it shows that you don't even kow what you reply to and just talk the first nonense that comes up in your mind. Otherwise if you you would not be a liar and have read what I wrote the post you made would never have existed with that first sentence.

yes because talking objectively about a game feature is "selfish" another attemp to make propaganda negatively towards my person. backup by what actually? thin air? At leats not facts, or are you going to point them out?

It's madness like that which explains why PGI doesn't read these forums.

what you do is madness, because there is neither logic nor real arguments involved in your posts, which per definition is much closer to madness. But I guess your logic won't accept that due to not fitting your little crusading goals

maybe, if you have some regular working logic and unerstanding you may be able to realise, that decals were even a wanted feature MWO started with, maybe your logic. can accept that this is going to be an ingame feature as much as skins, As skins in CS:GO and all the other many games having this as standard. But of course your either badly informed or anti decal crusade infected mind is ignoring this objectivity again. You are just on the thin between of a liar or an uninformed crusader that long ago left the path of objectivity and fact based argumentation.

But people aren't that stupid to fall for your chap attemps of generating that propaganda, it will just cause a few likeminded crusaders hopping on the same bandwagon making it even easier for the normal minded people to reveal your kind.

The only true issues existing abotu decals is quality and lightnng which seems nto to work proeprly at all making them look a bit too shiny and "unrealistic" But I am quite sur PGI is going to improve that.

And having the canopy painted matters...cuz?

Not like windshield graphics aren't already a thing... now? See above post about seriuz biznez. *smh*

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Timeline

nope... no where here does it state windshield graphics were invented. Not in any of the BT artwork either... or the novel covers... or any of the previous MechWarrior games... or MechCommander... not even MechAssault.

Nor do I see windshield graphics used in the real world on any tanks, APC's, SPG's, Anti Aircraft Launchers... battleships... fighter jets... etc... the best I got is basically a flying coffin with cameras facing in every direction but the only graphic there is an inch of steel and grey paint.

BattleTech's scifi, it is set in the year that isn't 1984 when BattleDroids/ Battletech happened. Anything past 1984 is alternate reality to modern life of 1984. Any other alterations from history is over rides material provided before that year... such as here the Second Cold War.

Currently USA is developing battlearmour... in 2 years time will you be complaining why doesn't the inner sphere have battlearmour when US Military already have it today (in a few years time)?
Would you complain that Donalds Trump Assassination is mentioned no where in BT?
In the timeline in 2016: Alliance Space Command was formed... would you suggest to nerf our satalite systems in MW: O because real life hasn't caught up yet and such?...

So far there's not a spec of information that graphics like these are available. and last time I ever bene in a vehicle with them you had poor visibility out of them to the point that I might as well have had black tinted windows and still see better...

if you want the next time catalyst games are having a live stream you may push forward the request to make it canon or put it as lostech or what ever for your justification but right now I am happy without it.

I made a small mod removes all decals. If you need it then search for it on YouTube for the title (MechWarrior Online Disable decals), the channel F'urik Colm.

War horns can go too. PGI can sell "La cucaracha" and "Dixi" warhorns for all I care, whatever pays the bills, just don't make me listen to that ****.

You just undermined every effort made by alex to make these mechs look good. That is what brings money to this game.

I'm sure i've seen you praising the looks of mechs in mwo.
So please don't contradict yourself.
Do you prefer clowns? ... or serious looking mechs?

Don't make me dig the past bish. Aren't you the one who lost his sh*t over slightly elevated warhammer cockpit?
Or non ppc arms on the same mech?
Or enforcer cockpit shape?
Or maddog stance?

Seems like its more serious biznez for you than me.
I just want decals to be ... decals.

@Navid

As someone who hasn't taken a plunge too far into this arguement. I'd like to say I'm fine with the decals, I like them, they can add humor, finish off a more conventional look, and in general add more personality to the mechs, which I find quite enjoyable. They could use some better blending options however to improve their looks if I had to come up with a complaint.

I'm originally a Warhammer 40k fan, over there our lore has just as many crazy things happening as the lore in Battletech, its just everyone I talk to from there embraces it, brings it up, and has a good laugh out of it from time to time, the Angry Marines we joke about actually are canon along with noise marines that play guitar as a sonic weapon and ork biker gangs attacking Mars. Its crazy and great.

Over here in Battletech people seem very very serious. You call these decals a disgrace and a shame on the legacy of Battletech and a discredit to Alex's art. Disgrace and shame are usually words people use to describe things that go against their religions, morals, nationalism, and other things they care greatly about. I find it greatly contrasting, the seriousness, and downright distaste for making a joke out of anything I see in these forums compared to the make-a-joke-out-of-nearly-everything mentality I see in WH40k.

I can see you have your own visions of what you feel the Battletech universe is and how it should be and feel greatly about them. I have no meaning to dissuade your beliefs, but I am curious as to your reasoning.

No man...

I am perfectly fine with joke decals.

What i'm not fine with is the absurd size of them over every feature of a mech in cheapest looking way possible.
Decals should not be scalable over half the mech body nor should they cover the cockpit.

Why shouldn't it cover the cockpit?

That's not actually "glass" u'knwo?
That's one way see through transparent ferro-glass.. It's as thick as the rest of the mechs armor.

You can't see through it from outside anyway, a gaze of a small laser would instantly fry the pilot.

If they manage to buld said, one way see through, transparent, hard as f* battlemech armor, ferro glass...

..they can make see through decals. You can get such foils in your local DIY market for 5 bucks.

Or do you think com-star is pulling some stings, hiding see through foils as lost'tech, kidnapping or killing off every sientist who's reseaching it?

I never wanted them and I simply asked for the option to turn them off for MY display; you can still have your laughable immersion if you want it and enjoy all the mech dongs you can get.

As for the rest of your fact-free personal attacks, you have still failed to address the one main question: why should EVERYONE be forced to see silly decals just because YOU think they are a good idea? You think they are immersive - I think they are a joke. You think they are a great feature - I think they are a waste of resources that could have been better spent addressing actual issues in the game. All I asked for the was the the option to not display them on MY screen; you can still have them. It is the nadir of idiocy to post a many paragraph long reply explaining why adding display options to the game are bad when they in no way affect you!

At least these forums have a switch I can use to ignore useless content, such as your posts and "reasoning." Have a nice life, not that I actually care.

I have zero problem with decals. Paint your mech however you like. Nose art is a valid war machine concept.

But I do have a problem when they take the hard work that Alex put into designing the mechs is simply covered over with what looks a super cheap windows paint drawing. Some of them just look really bad.

Still no student driver decal or custom paint yet. Oh well, time to move on PGI and give us NEW MAPS!

Intentionally bad, i think most folks just quickly try out the decal system and don't pay to much attention to aesthetic.
Only the second day and i've seen some amazing looking mechs with decals.
Not everyone used a smilie face for sh*ts and giggles, some use their camos and decals very complementary.
It's only the first iteration of the decal system and we don't have that many decals to choose from.

People should just step down for a week and see where it's actually going instead of going all apesh*t about how other people paint their (THEIR!) mechs.

I am more amazed that they simply forgot to put in letters and numbers.
It's like the question "what would our customers actually like to pay for" never came across their minds.
Solarsystem planet symbols? yeah.. nice.. but who actually asked for that?

I know like, 400 people who'd buy an M and S right away. Buying the letters U C K F and slightly rearrange the order is against the COC and shouldn't be the problem.

As much as I agree that the theme of the "deckals" don't fit the tone of the game, if you don't like them, don't put them on your mech.

If you don't like looking at them on your enemy's mech, kill the SOB. If you don't like them on your teammates mech...well umm...

Anyway, I hope they add more deckalals to the game that feel a bit more military unit feeling and less cheap sticker feeling. Regardless, we wanted deckalalalas and we got them, we didn't say anything about demanding ones that were tasteful :D.

[1], well, kinda depends really. this is a max scaled Clan Ghost Bear Insignia on my Executioners pouldron, looking nice and spiffy!
Posted Image
Now the other side I did something different due to asymetric size, so I went a tiny bit smaller, 1 notch slower on my scroll wheel.
Posted Image
and with the same size, a completely different weight class, my Raven 2X.
Posted Image

This is quite big decale size, basically the max... but as you can see it is very reasonably sized despite the differences between these two mechs size and weight being completely different.

The smallest mechs in game the commando and locust can barely have a single decale cover the protruding CT (locust) or chest (Commando) however... but these are only two extremes and to be quite frank I do not see any locusts running around with this junk.

I want to say that I think the current scales are okay... I was gonna suggest a scaling from light to assaults (assaults can get it bigger) but let's be real... There isn't much more reason to get a bigger decale until the Longbow is added which has a huge missile bay thus huge missile door which some may want to cover those doors with insignias.
Posted Image

[2] fully agree here. I also wish there was a wither function (with a slider), grime slider too, as well as a button to allow things like metal to go through the decal or not, or maybe make it so that it doesn't apply to anything gribbles like ladders, sensor dishes, etc.

I am sorry to tell you but physics doesn't work this way... here's how 1 way mirrors work and also an explanation on why you can't see inside a building from the window to easily at day but at night it's very easy.

So if you paint over it. Nada. no light gets in, all light is reflected out. Meaning the enemy will see that lovely um... is that a [censored] painted over your cockpit?... meanwhile all you see (if you see anything) is a very dark cockpit with a slight pink hue at best if it's a thin layer of paint... Considering that nearly all artwork on modern day military vehicle is using typically military/ industrial grade paint you won't get much light what so ever...
