I'll play whatever, but Assault as it is now doesn't really add much to anything and Skirmish honestly is how well over half of matches play out anyway.
Event or no event, I rarely see a match end due to cap/domination before the other side is wiped.

And to all say being a mechwarrior is about killing mechs and nothing else don't know crap about mechwarior and battletech. It is the opposite. Always was, on IS side and even more on Clan side.
But we only have our little arena shooter here so people think this is mechwarrior and objectives are unnecessary. And PGI did its own to get that thinking into the heads of the players with not giving rewards for playing the objective or making it not as shallow as it is.

It really saddens me how SO many people either only think about how they can make the most CBills, get their "Stats" up or simply JUST want to go kill 'Mechs .
I think MW:O is a GREAT Game . It offers a LOT of variety, and Strategical Options, throughout the various Maps and Modes . It just sadly ALL LOST on a mostly totally oblivious Playerbase who is made up of a lot of beancounting simpletons who HATE having to think beyond counting CBills , and only want to "vroomvroompewpew!" all day .
I have taken some flak for this opinion in the past, to the point of beind called "demented", "socially deficient" or simply "an Idiot"...but its what I think .

Generally, in the solo queue i'm picking: Conquest/Domination (map dependent) > Assault > Skirmish.
In evens that force certain playstyles: Conquest > Skirmish > /Domination (map dependent) > Assault.
Heavies/Assaults I never vote Conquest unless the other choice is domination on certain maps!

The pinnacle of it would be mixing circles and squares though.

Domination on Frozen City and Polar involve alot of maneuvering and flanking, unlike on Grim and Tourmaline which are death traps.
Frozen City need your team to secure the "rim" to establish firing line to cover the brawlers in the circle. Or have fast mover flanking around the outer rim to force a melee engagement on their sniper. Brawler try to keep their head down and fight other brawler for dominance around the circle, there are ice outcrop and bridge structure that offer cover from the rim but they expose left and right to brawler.
Some of my most memorable Domination game are fought on Frozen City.
Of course being QP, most of the time you end up with a big brawl around circle like all map, or sniper fest where no one dare to advance.
Polar is the opposite of Frozen City.
The circle sit on a raised hill, hiding the 2 force from each other, similar to Canyon but trench are more accessible than the gorge.
Scouting become very important, whether via UAV, friendlies peeking around the ridge, or ECM light spotting behind enemy flank. LRMs are brutal here when use properly.
Game on this map usually start with PPC poptart on the ridge, before one side start to explore opening on either side of the ridge, and nerve up for the push. The push is the most exciting part of the match for me, will the enemy overextend at a bad timing thus let us slaughter them, or they pour over with full force for pitch battle, will my team play defensively and hunker down in the trench for the push. Or it could be a LRM massacre with the survivors pick off one by one as they run.

Yep. Because Conquest is a game mode that only favors light and medium mechs. I've dropped into a Conquest match in an assault before, and it was miserable (especially on maps like polar highlands). You spend all game plodding across the map while speedier mechs rack up points. The only thing the heavier ones are good for is holding the center point, and if the enemy decides they don't want to contest it, you just sit there. If you get bored and move, a light mech races in and caps.
So yeah, roughly half the players in a queue will be at a huge disadvantage in a conquest game. That's why players don't usually vote for conquest.

Conquest takes a little more intelect, then ugh enemy KILL so of course its less popular with the masses

Even if I find entertaining playing real state tycoon in its 3 variants, because of rewards, most of the time all modes end in skirmish-eske behaviour.
