They did in fact catch the main programmer off guard with their initial detection and ban wave last year. He said that the game had no anti cheat for what was it 3+ years at the time and was a legitimate detection on PGIs part. It has since been patched and it is confirmed to be working and thus far undetectable since then. google and reddit it yourself because no one can really link to real talk about the state of the hack etc.
or PGI has made it a point not to do a mass public banwave again precisely to avoid setting off the programmers radar.
That said, in over 20k matches, I have been "positive" of aimbots maybe a dozen times ("good" cheaters tend to avoid being obvious, bad ones tend to get caught fast), whereas there are certain clans, even competitive ones, where I am all but certain were using wallhacks, but as you say, detecting and proving it, even at the best of times, is a lot tougher. That said, I would say the number of matches I have suspected Wallhacks are probably at least a factor of 100 higher than aimbots.
Probably the most common cheat I have seen though are the Lights zipping around fine, with normal ping, but who suddenly have massive ping spikes the moment they start taking return fire. (Pornstream, engaged?). This has been a relative constant since the days of the Raven, though I have seen it less in recent month... though that might also be related to me pretty much not playing anymore.

Many well known teams lag shielded for wins in faction play as standard procedure. Their unstoppable rushes were lead by lag shielded mechs, every match for some teams. Happy to name names but already got banned for that I am proud to say.

I can do this. At least you don't have to lag shoot them anymore.
Here are my tips.
Disable Cockpit Monitors and Glass.
Bring up the Task Manager and close down stuff you don't need. Example: Spotify, iTunes, UpdateChecker
Turn the game down to Medium, or Low if your computer stutters around Lights.
Zoom in if you have trouble seeing until the Light is closer.
Use lasers
PPFLD is the best way to kill Lights. Lasers are for those who have trouble hitting (SRMs work in a pinch, too). I'll stick to my AC20 as my Light Medicine.
Not a knock, just a fact. If you learn to lead, you want all that damage guaranteed to one spot. Lightsabering is for when you can't.

Before you freak out, it's totally benign.
It's just a bunch of random players, mixed units and pugs, pressing drop at the same time, some don't make it into the same game, the ones that do end up on either side of the matches, then they change channels depending on where the MM places them. And then they fight it out just like pug drops. There isn't any advantage in doing it because every player is basically randomly placed and everyone has voip anyway.
The only reason to be scared of it is because people who don't use voip are aweful at the game and don't like it when other people are better than them. But even in these cases there isn't anything to worry about as even if you end up in one of these matches, as many as on your team will be voiping as there are on the other team.
Marik used to do Civil War Mondays that way, too.

In all the years I have been here thats the best you can do? Bring up the same thing brought up twenty times before?
Well the last one making such a point was part of the 64 banned in the first wave so my bet on you stands.
So who is avoiding the subject now, eh?
You've been called a liar, clear proof presented, you got nothing to defend yourself with so you attack others instead - be it me or those supposed hackers and exploiters. On top of that everyone can see exactly how much of a terribad you are, so I don't even know who is the target audience for your stories is.
But the again, I guess if you repeat a lie many times someone may actually believe it. Must be a new trend north of Mexico.
Vote Trump.

at least moderators are always saying that.
The only ones that are proven are those in the list-of-glorious-64, the list was posted by PGI, either moderators moderate PGI or its not against CoC to post those names again, similar to the discussion we had back in the day about those guys in the said list-of-64 topic.
Regardless, this thread is going to get nuked simply because it deserves to be.

if one can actually maintain the beam the duration to one location, great. That is easy on Heavies and Assaults, to a lesser degree Mediums. Against a competent Light? It's literally impossible.
Lasers, spread and burst weapons are the weapon of choice for Bads in MWO precisely because the ability to inflicts SOME small amount of damage with consistency is preferable to missing all the time.
But Lightsabering Large Lasers and dinging a mech for 1-2 dmg here and there doesn't take skill. Repeatedly hitting the same section on a fast moving target with a non hitscan weapon, does.

I think it was okay to post that list because they were <proven> cheaters. But we cannot prove, just assuming.
At least we are always getting cautioned when trying to name players who are bad or got stupid builds (in russian branch).

The only way to get a really good hit on a light mech with lasers is to shift into reverse in a light mech and go the same direction he is at an opportune time. Can result in an excellent hit. For advanced pilots.
Done right the light mech is running towards you and the same direction. He gets a chance for a good hit to is the down side.

Really!
If you have never had the experience of headhotting someone in 4 years it seems more likely to appear here and accuse others of aimbotting.
"Skill" is a pretty big word as it is comprised of so many things. Skill also means how to fit weapons so that they appear in the upper mounts (e.g. sml stacking). There is also the skill to know where the enemy will be (omg this is not that hard but many still fail and yell wallhack). And so the list of things that seem to be cheating by less skilled can be continued.
Just my personal observation over the years that most of the times people came here and complained and delivered "proof" it turned out to be smth like an ECM Mech in the back.
