Simple answer they are leveling the playing field.
No more uber meta laser mechs or maybe I should say you can do it but at a price.
As well it should be.
If this was the real world both sides would run out of men and mechs in a week of combat.
I'm sure the tryhards will find a new meta.

Uber laser mechs stopped being uber months ago.

If you're going to complain about tryhards, you should at least get the meta right.

Well, I choose to believe for my own sanity they're not looking at implementing a huge swaft of changes, but are using this as an exploratory venture to try out various things. Not to give extensive testing to particular ideas so much as just making various changes that they've considered over the years and see what can happen as a result.

I think it's important to not take the PTS setup as "This is what we're thinking of putting live" and instead "We want to see how you break this."

You forget to say they are true professionals.
They DO have arguments and..... ideas!!

ED won't, but Paul will...and already has (on the PTS).

I expect modules to increase your energy limit. Because certain modules weren't already OP for being weightless money/exp sinks.

If I got lasts more than four hours, call your mechanic, because he'll want to congratulate you. (That isn't a warning label on the packaging)

I don't understand this new approach. Why is this happening now, and why didn't it happen before? And when is the PTS jump jet edition starting? Because I'd like to participate in that.

When I would be a self righteous douche bag i would say its because of me Posted Image Posted Image (I'v asked support ages ago about the strange performance of Clan ALRM - they performed much worser than normal Clan LRMs - and in the question i provided my path to get that data)

You know I have collected some weapon stats from some of you (average accuracy and average damage per shot) and got a gaussian curve for those values. So you get an exact idea about the weapon performance - you don't get this performance by tweaking just xml - because you might guess if 1.1beam duration vs 1.15 beam duration changes the average damage (decrease) and average accuracy (increase) but you don't have the numbers.
Running on PTS with only a couple of people still is enough to get your gaussian curve and to determine the performance - in the end it doesn't matter if 2000 players play or just 20 - because it is unlikely that the curve will change much.

So while we are just seeing DPS vs Alpha vs bla blablub - they finaly have the tools to see the big picture on PTS. This is very basic and simple mechanic - so they can indeed change their iterations fast

JumpJets on the other hand or game modes or energy draw or the old info warfare are hard to put in numbers

It's because PGI thinks they know better and every improvement has to be entirely of their own volition no matter how absolutely garbage their ideas are, because PGI management have their heads thoroughly lodged in their own ***.

You may like GH or not, but the balancing is in a very good spot after all these years. There is hardly any build that is op in every map or in every situation. If ED goes live it could take months if not years to get to that status again.

I think before ED goes live there should be a huge PTS event to get more feedback and see if it will be accepted by the vast majority.

There were no praises here. I just like to pretend I'm not as jaded as I am, that's all. In my perfect little fantasy world, there's a method to the madness. Because otherwise I'd be sad.

Esactly my thought.
No reason at all to screw it up again.
Doing the same dmg average with IS and Clan.
Playing fairly well both dps builds and pinpoint ones.
It all depends on situations, of course, but there is a balance.

Said it before I will say it again:

If they were interested in improving game play they would do as the OP suggests...small iterative changes to core game play mechanics. Improving game play is not what they are interested in however.

Rather, what they are interested in is making game play feel different, ideally VERY different than what the player base is accustomed to. In fact, they want the game play to feel completely new. Why?

Because when you are playing a "new" game you tend not to complain about a lack of new substantive content. Messing with these known mechanics is within PGI's skill set. Giving new substantive content is not (hey, how's the new assault mode coming?).

Edit:

There should have been a huge PTS event for the last three weeks, so as to get more feedback, etc. Running events on the live server non-stop since PTS came up is the opposite of asking the community to give feedback.

Before we light the pyre, I would flag that the last iteration of mass PTS testing (aka role warfare), they fiddled massively week in week out. As far as I can see, by making substantial changes they can see what sticks, whereas if they were to do that in the actual servers there would be revolution.
