Is there still really any point to it?

It will also provide a whole lot of closure for many people. Let the game sink or swim on its own merits or lack of it. <shrugs>

I'm pretty sure that if PGI or any developer tried to make a game like MWO without an official BT license, they would get sued regardless of whatever the mech/weapon/faction balance looked like.

The term is there for having certain people begrudgingly accept that there's "no other options". It's just a reminder until the HBS game is online.

Agreed its not

Why?
So this can turn into just another online shooter.
Which by the way it's not to far from it now.
However PGI is in it's own world right now and has no need to look beyond it.
That is until 2017 and the great whale migration begins.
I'd imagine then and only then will they wake up.
And probably to late.
Just plain sad.

So some people think that when HBS battltech game comes out there will be some great migration?

I'm just gonna play BattleTech on my second monitor between MWO matches. Unless Energy Draw goes through, in which case I will probably just find a different game.

But hey, if there is a "mass" exodus, and all the TT grognards leave, maybe we can finally have a good MechWarrior game and stop worrying about catering to their Mech Safe Space.

I don't know about any permanent changes to the population, but a lot of people will be trying it out when it drops.

there will be a mass exodus of roleplay lorenards when hbs bt comes out. this is both a good thing and a bad thing. pgi's target audience will change over to just the mechwarrior fans, who above all else want an experience like they had in the old games and are willing to let their banners and buckets go to get it. they would be foolish to try retain the tt fans at that point. let the mechwarrior people down and we might give the bt game a go, like it, and avoid this game like the plague. mwo can finally stop trying to be 2 games at that point and settle into its proper niche.

and of course being a niche game, it would be foolish to keep that failure of a match maker and that pile of buckets we call fp. i fully expect to see 2 or 3 times fewer players in the game, mechpacks will become more important and pgi might downsize their servers at that point. i hope it encourages them to get rid of the centralized game servers and go with private servers and just keep a phone home content verification server out there somewhere. even in that environment they can still keep the mechpacks flowing to fund the last vestiges of pgi's involvement.

There are plenty of current big stompy robot games. I tried for a short while a game like Titanfall. It's very similiar, but it also has the option where you can jump off your mec... oh sorry "Titan", and shoot enemy Titans as pilot. And the Titan even has some brains so you can order it to follow you or to go specific places on it's own and engage any enemy it sees, while you are taking a piss.

But, it's not Mechwarrior. It doesn't carry the legacy and title. I've played at least MW3 and MW4. Maybe even MW2, can't remember.

For me, Mechwarrior online is not about Battletech. For me it's Mechwarrior. Which is based on Battletech.

But it's quite different to have 3D first person shooter view, from some tabletop boardgame with dices and such. I have no appeal to play Battletech in any form, but I really like playing Mechwarrior.

There are other games which have Mechs, like recently released Hybrid Wars. They are literally called mechs and are visually very similiar to BT mechs. So I guess either their legal department sucks or it's OK to call big stompy robots as mechs, as long as they are not too similiar to BT.

So HBS causes the complete collapse of MWO as we know it, and forces everyone to play on some unit's server?

Where is the good thing you mentioned?
