I personally really like the design and the idea behind the mech. It makes logical sense to make a military machine out of an industrial chassis (its actually fairly common in military machine history).

As for the loadout options, of what I see, its a whole lot of meh (I dont have a problem with the lack of MASC, ECM or other goodies) but I do have an issue with just how limited the hardpoints are on the chassis.

I like it, and I like PGI adding new things to the lore (instead of being slaves to the lore, which TBH there are still a lot of fan favorite mechs that people want, and I cant blame them for getting angry when their mech hasnt come up yet). I think this is great, but I think they could have been a little more clearer that this was going to be a wholly original mech when they announced it. I mean its not like there hasnt been dozens of mechs ret-conned into the lore.

Liked the design, sadly they dontt have any variant with at least one ballistic hardpoint on both side torso. For me its a must buy if they have it but sadly they dont have it.

This abomination is awful, FD's design doesn't help at all (sorry, Alex, I am fan of your talent, but this roughneck is one ugly mf'ker, in my not-so-much-humble opinion). What else can I say about that bold marketing attemp (sarcasm) - it completely corresponds with few things I've learned about PGI during the years they claim the right over BT license:
  • PGI does not give a sh*t about players' feedback
  • PGI's staff does not play the game they make
I find the idea of intoroduction of non-lore Mechs in MWO vulgar and perverse. Oh well, would they read their own forums there won't be need to point at the obvious facts, I recon.

When Russ said the next mech was something they had never done before I honestly thought it was going to be a chassis mounting heavy lasers or inferno srm's or some other weapon not in the game. Silly, silly, silly idiotic me....

You are not alone.

I was about to not spent any cash on mwo anymore.
I was about to never buy a mechpack again.
I was about to not get lured in by preorder nonsense ever.

That said, the roughneck looks FING GLORIOUS!
Hands down best looking mech so far.
Well played PGI, hate to admit it but you may have opened up my wallet again.

Rad! :)

And... do they do this lore stuff for all the mechs? Because it's awesome. I do that sort of thing all the time on my own as solo RPGs. Good times!

Well I do not even know what to say. This is just another reason so many units have left the game and why they are struggling for players. Yes new players not familiar with the Battletech universe will think this is great and love playing it, but for those of us that were here in Beta and have had an on and off again love affair with PGI and all their missteps (3rd Person, Coolshot, Collisions, Transverse, IGP.........) This is just an absolute wrong step. So many other Mechs they could have rolled out and not some lame created crap based off a weak link to the Dark Age garbage that purists don't even like. Please PGI do the right thing and give us the game we have been waiting on for SO LONG. Even my unit may come back and play if you give us something with meat on the bone and more immersion for FW not just another mech pack roll out. This game is starting to become more pokemon then mechwarrior. (Gotta Collect them all) Just sad.

This seems like an appropriate place to ask:

As a longtime fan of Battletech, when you heard that PGI was making a MMO game based on that setting that would place you in the pilot's seat - what, exactly, were you expecting?

That's why I find it hard, as a relative newcomer (though I played my share of MW3 and MW4 back in the day) to the Battletech universe, to understand the criticisms. How did you think a tabletop game with dice and tables and miniatures and turn-based play and hexagonal tiles and roleplaying was going to be represented in what was so clearly an FPS? If anything, I feel increasingly that this was actually never really the game you were looking for... though your spirits may be lifted some at the recent announcements. Expanding on existing lore isn't a terrible thing but a lot of folks act like PGI has murdered the franchise. If MWO really was all about generating enough money for them to launch MW5... is that really so bad? Were promises made that they wouldn't create new mech designs, innovate ways to simulate clan warfare in the MMO platform, or that they'd follow any particular in-setting timeline?

I'm genuinely curious as to how so many fans of BT seem unable to understand that MWO simply isn't a tabletop game - but, like I said, I'm new to the game (started in April) and the setting in a general sense. Am I missing something?

Okay, so continuing on what I said above - why do you think PGI owes you a Hermes II or Javelin? Where have they said this? Help me understand.

Guys, there is a variant with one head and two CT energy hard points. With massive shield arms. Just saying.
Anyways, let's let them have a little fun. I think Alex and the mercy dev team have the right to try something new. Honestly, the multi hundred year history of Battletech could use a few more designs. For that period of time, they are pretty sparse.

PGI doesn't owe you a damn thing.

and don't say they do because you bought a mech pack. because you got what you paid for, early access to that mech.

now, say, if you helped fix Alex's car or something, that'd be different :P

Do we out of 65 tonn Sphere mechs? We still have Crusader, Bombadier, Crossbow, Cestus, Ostwar (whole Ostseries, in fact) and Von Rochs. And then - this. Another "melee" mech for game without melee combat.

I like the look of the Roughneck. It reminds me most of the Warhammer. Being a primarily light mech pilot, I probably won't use this mech much, if at all, but I do like the look of it. To my eye, it's a more Japanese style of visual mech design, like many of the original designs that BattleTech used. (I had a poor first impression of BattleTech, all those years ago, on the grounds that any game that copied key elements so blatantly from other sources couldn't be any good. Ironically, the only BattleTech game I eventually played [prior to MWO] was MechForce, in which visual mech design had no practical role at all.)

"According to rumor, the designer had serious dirt on the CEO" ... is this a parallel to real life, and thus the true reason behind this mech's introduction, perhaps? (Substitute Alex and Russ into that sentence.) Posted Image

Wow, surprised by the hate... I think it's a good looking mech, and I like the hardpoints on them... I would have preferred the Annihilator, but I'm fine with the occasional homebrew mech. I haven't decided if I'll buy one yet or not... But it's tempting.

Nice. Alex finally got to make a mech without being as restricted as he normally is with lore and trying to update an older mech.

Personally I wish PGI had stuck to more lore versions for their Mechs. I honestly don't see how they thought creating a new Mech was a good idea. As much flak as they've taken from the community for things they've done (3pv, cool shots, collisions, etc) I don't see how they were like, "You know what will really win people back? How bout we design our very own new Mech," Most people I know that are into BT love it because of the lore. I personally know some much of the lore up until Dark Age (cause most BT purists hate Dark Age, it's garbage). I can guarantee I will not be picking this Mech up.
