So what is the early verdict? Are they any good?

The best variants are the A, and therefore the C as well. Get a pair of guns on it. I'm running 2 LB10 2 LPL and 2 Flamers with a 375 xl. I'm considering trying a 350 XL to make room for heat sinks and jump jets.

The Scorch is most definitely worth it. Double gauss + PPC with backup SRMs? Yes.
Double LB-X + SRM6+A + backup laser slaughter? Yes.
It's unique in that it is the only clan mech that can have ballistics in both arms and have fully actuated movement; as in, side to side + up and down aim. Arm lock is an abomination in this mech and you should feel bad if you leave it on piloting it.
The Marauder IIC-C and D are the odd ones.
I just slapped 5 medium pulse lasers and 2 lb 10 xs on the C with full jumpjets. It can't match the sheer dakka of 3 hardpoints and it doesn't match the sheer energy vomit some of the other variants to add. But hey, it's fun. BLAP.
As for the D I am running a really funky build. XL 340 with 2 goose waffles in the arms, 2 ER large lasers in the head and torso, and 2 s-srm4s for the M(L)G enthusiasts stomping around in their lights and mediums boating the buffed machine guns (they are actually dangerous, don't be fooled!) It's weird to mix the long burn with pinpoint but I'm getting the hang of getting full burn on the lasers while the goose waffles charge and "snapping" the goose waffles to a lead just before firing to get the full damage from both weapons systems.

Now's a good time to take some flamer based mechs out for a spin. Not many have mastered theirs yet and it runs hot even with elite skills!

seems to me the way to reduce heat would be to just mount less guns and more DHS but I guess I will find out when I get home.

DHS fills up slots very quickly so you end up taking a lot of guns anyway to fill up tonnage, even with a larger engine.

It doesn't run that hot, 4 PPCs are very manageable
However I found 2 PPCs and 3 CUAC5 to be much more of a beast, even with no skills it runs cool and you can take on Kodiaks in an even fight, it's survivability is surprisingly good, any quirks would make it obscenely OP

I'd leave that to the warhawk since it's uber quirked for it, but I'm still experimenting with the energy based MAD-IICs. I've tried out 3x LPL and it seems ok, given how you just need to wiggle the troso instead of full on twist to spread damage

Funstuff...the A variant is the only clanmech i know of where a standard engine would make sense...
