Hey MechWarriors!

We've got another set of Champion Mech's we'd like your help making builds for!
They can all be found in the Champion Mech Build subforum here!

We're looking for your help in building the following Champions:



Keep in mind when posting your builds to be New Player Friendly!
Even if you don't have a build you'd like to share, come check them out anyway to contribute your vote to the builds you like best!

Can we get it clarified if you want NEW PLAYER FRIENDLY builds as a priority before folks go pumping out designs to fit the current meta which might become invalid by the time the champions are released in a future patch.

Should new players not be given effective builds to help the learn the game?

"effective" isn't necessarily the same as "new player friendly". Gauss/ERPPC is very effective but I wouldn't say it's easy for new players.

Can you use the omni-pods for the Loyalty and/or the Hero? Or are you restricted to using only the pods from the bases variants or the base variants and reinforcements, if applicable. I am guessing that it is only the chassis and pods that are currently available for c-bills.

agreed, I believe new player freindly does not mean ineffective, but it does mean there should be an opertunity to try all weapon systems (Clan and IS ACs, missiles, lasers) and a variaty of playstyles (brawlers, long range fire support, mid range fire support ect.) accross the 8 chassis

yes they should, however they also need variaty (not just lasers and ac10 spam) to get a feel for the diferant weapon types and playstyles

No. Why would they build free Mechs cobbled from pay-only bits? That would put a sour taste in someone's mouth when they try to build one with their cbill-purchased Mechs.

Hero pods would not be available as they cannot be purchased except with the hero chassis, and likewise Hero variants cannot be used for champion builds (PGI is not about to do a +30% XP AND +30% C-bill bonus mech).

As to new player friendly...they apparently have said in the individual champion thread postings that they're to be used mainly for new players (so trials mech rotation). Of course this also for the various chassis which already have hero's means we may see mastery bundles with those mechs soon after the champions are released in what should be the march or april patch.

While some of the last round of champions WERE new player friendly... several were not...and that had critical threads afterwards with many questioning why they got voted in, since everyone who took part clearly had to know they'd become trial mechs, and thus not necessarily be good for new players to the game. Tina at the time said they'd put greater emphasis on ensuring future champion builds would be new player friendly.

Oh well if we can't use lasers and AC10s then there isn't any good build we can give them.

There's nothing wrong with variety, but we shouldn't be encouraging objectively bad playstyles on new players.

Objectively bad is relative though

We are going to have these champions for a long time, and 'good builds' change often

Almost every (C) mech out there uses what was once a 'meta' build.

How many of them are still good?

I'd say let's try to give these (C) mechs builds that help teach the game mechanics.

Not give them today's meta.

So rather than give them what might not be so great anymore in a few months, we want to give them what is not good now, and won't be good in the future either? How does giving them bad builds teach them game mechanics any better than giving them good builds?

He's asking for variety, not bad builds. SRM brawler. SPL brawler. Dakka boat. Laser vomit. Gauss vomit. Gauss/PPC. LRM boat.

No, you give them builds that *work* and that are *good enough*

You need to look at it from the perspective that people who have NEVER EVER EVER EVER touched this game before EVER can jump in and do "good enough" right away, because these are the mechs that they *will* be using in QP and FW until they have enough C-Bills to buy their own mechs.

To a lesser degree, these mechs should be "good enough" such that someone who is experienced can do reasonably well with them in the event that they try to jump in FW and find that they don't have the right mechs on-hand (tonnage, faction, whatever) and are then forced to rely on trials.

That means you want something mediocre...very middle of the road. Not trash, but not great either. Something that just, well, works.


Look, the fact of the matter is that far too many meta mechs require knowledge and experience of the game as a whole to be effective. They also almost always assume that the pilot has Mastered said mech as well.

This is why when putting builds together one must consider the target audience and primary user of this mech. That means, it should be a build that you find fun, enjoyable and is easy enough to wrap one's head around quickly.

And this is another great point. I watch people point and laugh at "those noobs bringing trials" to a match (FW, group or whatever), completely forgetting that many of the Trial/Champion mechs were designed by this very community...based on the meta and what was "good" at that time. Those times have changed and those builds aren't as good as they once were.

So for the Kodiak champion build Im going to assume its a KDK-3 with UAC's?

Oh my, that is going to help the newbies and game all at the same time 'shudders'.

Giving new players a mech that is clearly OP and inflates their numbers is good for the game how? It teaches them and gets them ready for what?

Whilst a lot of the champion builds arent great anymore, they are still objectively better than their original form which is lore builds, we all know how good lore builds work in this game (sorry Restolll).

The lack of AMS equipped builds I'm seeing from this community is a travesty. These are builds for new players. They cannot equip Radar deprivation even if they wanted to. LRMs are notoriously frustrating for new players and you guys are depriving them of a critical tool in mitigating that frustration a little.
