I see lots of great players do very well with IS XL engines.

Personally though, I try to avoid builds with IS XL engines if I can help it. I run a couple builds with XL like the Jager, but otherwise, I mostly stick to standard engines. I think sometimes you can really surprise people when you don't go down after your opponent XL checks you. There are some mechs where XL is so common, I'll start turning away after knocking their side torso out only to have to double-take when I realize he's still up and fighting.

Haha, funny story: typical HPG nascar toward the right gate and nuke something in the butt. I go to XL check this Jager... of course he has buttloads of rear armour so he survives long enough to turn around and face me, just so I can blow his side torso off immediately. STANDARD ENGINE. He gets away, around the corner to the safety of his allies. Less than 30 seconds later, somebody narc's him and I see he disconnected.

Blow off the side torso, disconnect out of frustration. ARTIFICIAL XL FOR THE WIN.

Also, you can't torso-twist to spread the damage of a gauss+ppc, there's not enough time.

There is if said Gauss+PPCs are used at the distances they are most effective at (~800-1000m) compared to the rest of weaponry. Even Gauss with the 2000m/s projectile speed takes 0.5s to travel 1km, it leaves you about 0.3-0.4s to react and torso twist / change course / stop after you see the shot. I can literally dodge (as in completely avoid, not simply spread damage) PPCs fired from 800m in smth like a Locust ez mode, a little harder but still doable with Gauss, and most mechs that aren't named Dire can spread PPFLD just fine. A clear example of that is seen each time you observe a match between your so-called "good" players. Watch MWOWC regionals or final matches ... somehow mechs there are dieing at ~30% health with literally no armor anywhere, both clan and IS-XLs. And needless to say those matches feature an abundance of PPFLD mechs. Obviously its harder to do than spread ERLLs / lurms etc., but it is possible and isn't even all that difficult in your typical PUG match even with plenty of "good" players.

Of course if you reaction time is 5s+ like most PUGs it is a different story.

Given the fact that the normal reaction time is somewhere between 0.25 and 1 second, tell me how can you spread PPFLD with something not called Locust or similar, or as you said "in a mech not called Dire".

Look, no offense or anything, but if your reaction time is ~1s then you probably gonna suck in FPS games big time.

What part of "between 0.25 and 1 second" you didn't read?

The question you've asked in your post was answered in the very same post under the quote. Now shoo.

It's highly likely he did not place ammo too well and you took out remaining ammo. I know the SRMmoner is actually prone to this if you lose your left torso after a while.

That kind of generalisation would get you into a lot of trouble.

So can focusing on only one side when both can be present on the field simultaneously in any given game. =/

Clanners can do that already. Why not even out the playing field?

Because that would even out the playing field.
