So as the NGNG and PGI Competitive Roundtable was setting up I noticed they were showing off the roughneck from behind.

Posted Image

So right off the back it makes me think of a mix of the Thunderbolt and Warhammer, not a bad mix. Looks like no matter what you get those shoulder pods even if you have nothing in there, but, anything you mount in there (missiles, or ballistics) will be cockpit level, nice. Narrow waist as expected but side profile is pretty meaty so rear CT is going to be easy to hit, vulnerable to LRM's so QP you will need to make certain to go side ways when hugging suspect cover. Got to say, the texture work is indeed top notch.

Edit to add other photos.

At least it looks like an industrial mech from behind. But yeah the torsi will be fat. Hopefully not Thunderbutt fat, or LFE is needed.

From the front, looks more... Thunderbolt than Warhammer from the front, looks like it does have those shoulder mounts only when it has weapons now that we see it from the front. Lot slimmer than the Thunderbolt however so it will do better in that regard, those legs eat a lot of that volume up.

I mean I'd smash, she's a solid 7 at least.

It's no big deal.

I agree the textures on it look pretty sweet. My first thought when I saw it was how it resembled a warhammer from behind.

Those high shoulder mounts though. This thing is soooo meta.

Did you just assume the Roughneck's gender?

IS needs something to fill that niche at this point, so no complaints from me.

I agree. I'm happy I purchased it, those high shoulder mounts will make an energy setup very good on this thing.

Stock loadout on the roughneck to chew on, looks pretty decent placement for everything, no shadowhawk syndrome where you want to order your techs to get fusion cutters to remove the stupid hood over your cockpit so you can actually friggen see.

Honestly... need more angles. Tool many full frontal making contours hard to tell. But the cockpit head area looks too flat, instead of that raked angle in the art.

Looks too much like this

Torsi are not at all fat. It's actually quite narrow:

Remember that it is 65 tons, too, so it's fairly sm0l.

Really hoping that it will be a 65 ton version of the Shawk.

Should be. LFE and ERML will also really help it sing.

I am moderately excited.

Very much feeling like a 65 ton Shadowhawk, minus the bad cockpit, more like 65 ton Hunchback IIC crossed with a Shadowhawk.

The torso looks incredibly narrow considering the weight class. However the legs and the diaper are rather huge.

Takes up the same slot. Some of these have up to three E hardpoints in CT and Head, which is a lot of crummy firepower...unless you have ERML!

The people that worked on this home-brew new mech design knocked it out of the park. It simply looks fantastic. I think if I was an IS player I'd probably own some Thunderbolts so reaching for my wallet on this would have been tough, but if I had skipped the 65 ton range for my mech supply... This one looks stellar.

I have historically not bought mechs until after release but I admit - I really like the look, feel and concept of the Roughneck. Alex has spent years giving a specific flavor to Battletech that I really like. In TT you can tell just by the picture what TRO a mech came out of and they all had a big variance. Call it nostalgia but I always preferred the 3025 TRO look - which is what has been carried through to everything else.

Just picked up the Ultimate pack. It'll be the first mech I bought prior to release since the original Resistance pack (BLR/SHD/LCT/THD). Everything else I picked up after release.

However I really like the look of it and I really, really appreciate the impact Alex has had on Battletech mechs. I'm overjoyed to see HBS has kept his artwork and designs and I really enjoy the concept and design of the Roughneck as an addition to Battletech canon.

The audio on mechs in MWO is good too. The subtle variance of sounds between mechs that their movement makes. Anyone else notice that? Subtle but a very nice touch. Whatever other complaints I may have about MWO the visual design of the mechs and the audio work has always been exceptional and the Roughneck is a damn sexy addition.
